What an AI call center replaces in a traditional one
A traditional call centre or BPO arrangement is built around seats: you pay for people, desks, headsets, team leaders, a quality team that samples a fraction of calls, and recruiters who replace the agents who leave. Capacity is fixed by headcount, and the floor runs in shifts, so night and Sunday cover is either expensive or missing.
An AI call center turns that into software. Capacity is set by concurrency rather than seats, the phones are answered around the clock, quality checks run on every transcript rather than a sample, and there is no attrition to manage. What it does not replace is everything that needs human judgment.
Line items: running a call centre vs an AI call center
| Line item | Traditional call centre / BPO | Outpero AI call center |
|---|---|---|
| Agents | Salaries per seat; a telecaller is roughly ₹15,000–₹25,000/month | No seats; pay ₹5–₹6.8 per connected minute |
| Setup | Hiring, training, desks, dialer licences | No setup fee; self-serve at app.outpero.com |
| Inbound cover | Office hours, extra cost for nights and Sundays | Business number answered 24/7 |
| Outbound capacity | One call per agent | Channels: 1 included with the number, each extra ₹649/month |
| Quality monitoring | Supervisors sample a small share of calls | Every call recorded, transcribed, summarised and sentiment-tagged |
| Languages | Depends on who you hired | Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Indian English |
| Ramp up or down | Weeks to hire, notice periods to reduce | Add or remove channels, or pause a campaign |
| Contracts | Often minimum seats or a fixed term | No lock-in; credits never expire |
Inbound: the desk that never closes
Many call centres exist mainly to answer incoming calls — enquiries from ads and hoardings, appointment requests, order questions. Outpero's AI employee answers your business number 24/7, handles the enquiry, qualifies the caller, books the appointment and logs everything with a transcript and summary. A hospital chain's enquiry line, a coaching institute's admissions number or a real estate project's hoarding number no longer goes to voicemail at 10 pm.
Worth knowing about the AI desk: it can transfer a call to your team when a person should take it. Otherwise the agent records the request and flags it in the summary and webhook, and your team calls back.
Outbound workloads an AI agent handles
- —Lead response and qualification for real estate, education, solar and insurance campaigns, with new leads called within 30 seconds.
- —Appointment confirmation and reminders for hospital chains and diagnostic labs.
- —EMI and payment reminders for lenders, with promise-to-pay dates captured.
- —COD confirmation and NDR follow-up for ecommerce brands.
- —Renewal reminders for insurers, gyms and subscription businesses.
- —Feedback and NPS surveys after delivery or service.
For pure announcements with no reply needed, such as a branch closure or a service outage, Outpero's voice broadcast plays one fixed message to a whole list at a lower rate than AI conversation minutes.

Quality and data: the part that changes most
In a human call centre, a QA analyst might listen to a few calls per agent per week. In an AI call center, every call produces a recording, a transcript, a summary, a sentiment tag and the custom fields you defined — budget, preferred date, reason for cancellation — available in the dashboard, as CSV export and at your webhook. You can read what customers actually said across thousands of calls instead of guessing from a sample. If cancellations spike in one city, or one objection keeps coming up about price, it shows up in the data within days rather than at the next quarterly review.
Languages across regions
A national operation usually needs several language desks. Outpero's agents cover Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, each switching to English mid-sentence when the caller does. If your customer base is concentrated in West Bengal, Gujarat, Punjab or Odisha, those languages are not available yet and a human desk still makes sense for them.
Cost model
There is no seat price. You pay only for connected talk time from prepaid credits (1 credit = ₹1): ₹5/min on Standard (also used for bulk campaigns), ₹6.8/min on Premium native-speaker voices. Each dedicated number is ₹649/month including compliance and carrier fees and 1 channel; prices exclude 18% GST. One telecaller's ₹18,000 reference salary buys roughly 3,600 connected minutes at Standard, spread across as many channels as your campaigns and inbound traffic need (₹649/month for each extra one).
Compliance in an AI call center
The same rules apply as on any calling floor: TRAI's TCCCPR 2018 for outbound commercial calls, DLT registration, DND / NCPR screening for promotional calls, daytime calling windows, and the RBI's 8 am to 7 pm window for recovery calls. Sector rules still apply — IRDAI for insurance, RBI for lending. Outpero calls from a DLT-registered line and screens bulk campaign lists against DND, and full recordings make it easy to show exactly what was said on any call.
How to evaluate an AI call center platform
- —Run a pilot on one real inbound line and one outbound campaign alongside your human team, and compare cost per completed outcome.
- —Check concurrency and campaign limits against your peak volume.
- —Confirm the data flow into your CRM and reporting.
- —Ask about uptime commitments; Outpero offers a 99.9% uptime SLA.
When to keep the human call centre
Keep people for complaints and escalations, refunds, complex troubleshooting, sales that need negotiation, and any language the AI does not cover. Many teams end up with a hybrid: the AI answers every call and makes the volume calls, and a smaller, better-paid human team calls back the customers it has flagged.
