What a missed call number service does
A missed call service provider in India rents you a number, usually toll-free or a virtual number, that you advertise with a line such as "give a missed call to get a quote". When someone dials it, the call is rejected after a ring or two, so the caller pays nothing. The provider records the caller's number and the time, and sends it to you as a lead.
The model took off in India because many customers are careful with prepaid balance and uneasy about filling forms in English. A missed call is the lowest-effort way to say "I am interested". It is common on hoardings, newspaper ads, loan and insurance campaigns, political and NGO outreach, coaching posters and product packaging.
How the flow works, and where it breaks
- 01You advertise the number on a poster, ad, pack or SMS.
- 02A customer dials it and hangs up. The provider logs the number and sends an acknowledgement SMS or WhatsApp message if you have set one up.
- 03The lead lands in a dashboard, a CSV or your CRM, often through a webhook.
- 04A telecaller is meant to ring the customer back.
- 05The callback happens hours or days later, or never.
Step 4 is where the value leaks. A missed call is a spike of intent that fades quickly: the person who rang at 8 pm after seeing your hoarding has often forgotten the details by the next afternoon. The widely cited 2011 Harvard Business Review lead-response study found that contacting a lead within an hour was far more likely to qualify it than waiting even a little longer. A missed-call list that is called back next week is a cold list.
Two different meanings of missed call
Businesses use the phrase for separate problems, and they need different fixes.
| Problem | What it means | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Missed-call lead capture | Customers ring your campaign number and hang up on purpose | A callback within seconds, so the lead is spoken to while interest is high |
| Missed inbound calls | Customers ring your real business number and nobody answers | An AI employee that answers the number 24/7, handles the enquiry and logs it |
| Missed callbacks | Your team was supposed to ring back and did not | Auto-retries and scheduled callbacks that do not depend on someone remembering |
How Outpero fits behind a missed-call number
Missed-call, IVR and toll-free lines come from telephony vendors, while Outpero is the calling layer on top (ask the team about number options). Telephony vendors such as Knowlarity do sell those, including missed-call numbers, and a business that needs the number itself should buy it from one of them. What Outpero adds is the conversation that follows.
When your missed-call provider can send each new lead to a webhook, or to a tool such as Zapier or Make, that lead can trigger an Outpero instant lead call. The agent dials the number within 30 seconds from a DLT-registered line and opens in the language you have chosen. It asks the two or three questions your team would have asked, answers common questions from the brief you wrote, and can book a slot, read or write a spreadsheet or send a WhatsApp message.
The same agent can answer calls to your own Outpero business number, so the other meaning of missed call, nobody picking up, is handled by one system. It remembers returning callers and picks up from the last conversation. If a caller needs a person, the call can be transferred to your team.

Languages for missed-call campaigns
Missed-call campaigns skew towards customers who are most comfortable in their own language, which is exactly where English-first callbacks fail. Outpero's agent holds live calls in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, and moves into English the moment the caller does. The per-minute price is the same in every language.
Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, Urdu and Assamese are not supported. If your missed-call campaign runs in one of those states, route those leads to human callers.
What it costs: the number and the callback
Missed-call numbers are priced by the provider. As one published reference point, Knowlarity lists toll-free plans at Rs 21,000 to Rs 46,200 a year. Check your own provider's current rate card, because it changes.
Outpero's side is simple. There is no setup fee, no monthly subscription and no contract. You pay for connected talk time from prepaid credits at ₹5 per minute on Standard or ₹6.8 on Premium, and unanswered calls are not billed.
| Scenario | Arithmetic | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 500 missed-call leads, each callback 3 minutes, Standard | 500 × 3 × ₹5 | ₹7,500 |
| The same 500 leads on Premium | 500 × 3 × ₹6.8 | ₹10,200 |
| One extra concurrent line for a busy campaign day | 1 additional channel | ₹649/month, removable any month |
| A dedicated +91 number so leads see one number | Includes 1 channel | ₹649/month |
All prices exclude 18% GST. The 3-minute length is an assumption; shorter qualification calls cost less. For comparison, one human telecaller costs roughly ₹18,000 a month, works one shift and rings one person at a time, so a Saturday-night burst of missed calls waits until Monday.
Compliance: TRAI, DLT and DND
A person who gave a missed call to a number you advertised for enquiries has invited contact, and calling them back about that enquiry is the cleanest ground. Keep the evidence: the number, the timestamp and the advertisement they responded to. Do not reuse the list for unrelated promotions.
TRAI's rules still apply. Commercial senders register on the DLT platform, promotional calls must respect the DND registry, and calls belong in daytime hours. Outpero calls from a DLT-registered line and screens bulk campaign lists against DND; you stay responsible for lawful consent, and the DPDP Act 2023 covers the personal data you store.
How to choose and when not to switch
- —Ask your missed-call provider whether each lead can be pushed to a webhook, Zapier or Make in real time, not only exported as a daily CSV.
- —Check whether an acknowledgement SMS or WhatsApp message goes out at once, so the customer expects the call.
- —Test the callback in your customers' language, and interrupt it mid-sentence to see how it recovers.
- —Decide the calling window, retry rules and what counts as a qualified lead before the first campaign.
- —Keep your human team for complex or high-value conversations, and use call transfer for those.
If you collect only a handful of missed calls a day and your team rings each back within minutes, adding an AI agent gains little. The case is strongest when volumes spike, leads arrive out of hours, or your callbacks are slow.
