What auto dialer software does
An auto dialer takes a list of numbers and places the calls for you. A telecaller no longer types a number, waits through ringing and noting down busy signals. The software does that and, depending on the mode, hands the answered call to a free agent.
This solves a real problem. In a manual telecalling team a large share of each hour disappears into dialling, ringing and unanswered calls. Dialer software compresses that. What it does not touch is the part that costs the most: a person still has to speak to every customer who picks up.
The four dialer modes, in plain terms
| Mode | How it dials | Who is on the line | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preview | Shows the contact to the agent, who clicks to call | An agent, ready before dialling | Slowest, but best for high-value calls needing preparation |
| Progressive or power | Dials the next number as soon as the agent is free | One agent per call | Predictable, no dropped calls, some idle time |
| Predictive | Dials several numbers per free agent using answer-rate estimates | An agent is connected when someone answers | Highest talk time, but a customer may answer and find no agent free |
| AI dialer | Dials from a list and an AI agent holds each conversation | No human on the line | Limited by channels, not by headcount |
The predictive mode deserves a warning. Because it dials more numbers than it has agents, some answered calls arrive when no agent is free, and the customer hears silence or a dead line. That is the call people complain about, and it is the reason predictive dialling is a regulatory and reputation risk in a market where customers already distrust unknown numbers.
Where AI replaces the dialler, and where it does not
An AI dialer removes the agent from the line entirely. Outpero's bulk campaigns take an uploaded CSV, apply your calling windows and DND screening, dial each contact, hold an AI conversation, retry the unanswered, and schedule callbacks. The number of calls that run at once equals your channels.
- —Replace the dialler when the calls are repetitive: lead follow-up, reminders, confirmations, reactivation, simple qualification.
- —Keep a human dialler for complex consultative sales, large-ticket negotiations and sensitive collections.
- —Use both when you want the AI to qualify and transfer the interested to a person; Outpero can transfer a call to your team when a human should take it.
Where auto dialers are used in India
- —Real estate sales teams working through 99acres and MagicBricks enquiry lists.
- —Education and coaching centres calling admission leads after a campaign.
- —Insurance and loan teams working renewal and application follow-up lists.
- —E-commerce teams confirming cash-on-delivery orders before dispatch.
- —Telecom, broadband and utility collections desks working overdue lists.
Languages and the dialler question
Hear it on a real call before you read further?
A dialler is language-neutral because it only connects calls; the language problem moves to your staff. A Hyderabad team may need Telugu, Hindi and Urdu speakers on the same shift, and a Chennai team needs Tamil. With an AI dialler the language sits in the agent, which speaks Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam or Indian English and switches to English when the caller does. That makes a single list across states workable without hiring per language.

What auto dialer software costs, with arithmetic
Dialler pricing in India usually combines a seat licence per agent, a telephony or minute charge, and sometimes a number rental. The seat fee varies by vendor and plan, so ask for it in writing. The larger cost is the agents themselves: a human telecaller in India costs roughly ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month, and ₹18,000 is a reasonable reference.
| Option | Working | Monthly cost (before GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Dialler plus 5 telecallers | 5 x ₹18,000 = ₹90,000 in salary, plus seat licences and call charges | ₹90,000 and up |
| AI bulk campaign, 1,000 dials | Assume 400 answer and talk 2 minutes: 400 x 2 x ₹5 = ₹4,000 | ₹4,000 plus ₹649 number |
| Throughput of that campaign | About 55 dials per hour per channel: 1,000 dials on 3 channels is roughly 6 hours | Extra channels: 2 x ₹649 = ₹1,298 |
The second row rests on an assumed 40 percent answer rate and a two-minute average call, both of which you should replace with your own. Unanswered calls are not billed on Outpero, so a low answer rate lengthens the campaign but does not raise the bill.
Compliance for automated dialling in India
TRAI's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018 apply to any automated outbound calling for commercial purposes. The sender must be registered on DLT. Promotional calls may only reach people who are not on the DND preference list or who have given consent. In 2024 TRAI directed operators to act against promotional calls from unregistered senders over PRI and SIP lines, and promotional telemarketing is expected to use the 140-series numbers.
- —Scrub every list against DND before dialling; Outpero's bulk campaigns do this screening.
- —Separate service calls, such as order confirmation, from promotional ones in your campaign design.
- —Set calling windows to sensible daytime hours and honour opt-outs immediately.
- —Never run predictive-style over-dialling that leaves answered calls with nobody on the line.
How to evaluate auto dialer software
- —Ask which modes it supports and what its abandoned-call handling is.
- —Check DND scrubbing, calling windows, retry rules and callback scheduling.
- —Look at reporting: connect rate, talk time, dispositions per agent and per list.
- —Ask what changes if you later want AI agents on the same list.
- —Price the whole stack, including seats, telephony and the people, not the licence alone.
If your calls are long, consultative and high value, a good human team on a preview or power dialler beats an AI on the first call. Outpero is strongest where the volume is high and the call is repeatable. Many teams do best with AI doing first contact and a person closing.
