AI Calls for EMI Collection

An AI voice agent for EMI collection calls borrowers before and after their EMI date, reminds them of the amount, and records a promise to pay and the reason for any delay. Outpero runs these as bulk campaigns from your due list, inside a calling window you set to RBI's recovery-conduct hours, and sends each borrower's commitment and sentiment to your collections system by webhook.

Why EMI collection breaks when people do it

NBFCs, microfinance lenders and fintech apps in India run collections at volumes no in-house team can call properly: tens of thousands of EMIs falling due on the same few dates each month. Telecallers on early-bucket accounts churn fast, and stressed, under-trained callers are where tone slips — the RBI has repeatedly warned lenders over abusive and late-night recovery calls. Meanwhile most early delays are simple: salary came late, the auto-debit bounced, or the borrower forgot.

Step by step

How it works

  • 01Upload the due list with borrower name, number, loan ID, EMI amount, due date and days past due, segmented by bucket.
  • 02Set the calling window — no calls before 8 am or after 7 pm — along with retries and the language for each region.
  • 03The agent calls and verifies it is speaking to the borrower before stating any loan details, then reminds them of the EMI amount and date.
  • 04It asks when the EMI will be paid, captures the reason for any delay, and sends a payment link over WhatsApp if the borrower wants one.
  • 05Promise-to-pay date, reason codes, disputes and sentiment go to your webhook, so senior or field collectors work only the accounts that need them.

  1. Outpero AI
Hello, may I speak with Murugan? I'm an AI assistant calling from a finance company.
  2. Caller
He isn't home right now. I'm his wife. What is this about?
  3. Outpero AI
Thank you. I can only discuss account details with Murugan himself. Could you tell me a time when he is usually free?
  4. Caller
After 6 in the evening he's back.
  5. Outpero AI
Understood, I'll call again after 6 this evening. Please just let him know that someone from the finance company called. Is that fine?
  6. Caller
Is it about the vehicle loan? Is there a problem?
  7. Outpero AI
I'm sorry, I can't share any details without speaking to him directly. It would be best to speak to him in the evening.
  8. Caller
    Okay, I'll tell him.
  9. Outpero AI
Thank you. I'll note the callback time. Have a good day.
What the agent did

Right-party contact not confirmed, no loan details disclosed, call back requested after 6 pm and scheduled, outcome tagged as third-party answered so a second attempt is made within the permitted calling window.

How the trigger reaches Outpero

Where it comes fromHow it gets to the agent
Collections CSV from your loan systemExport the day's due list by days-past-due bucket with loan ID, amount and language, and upload it as a scheduled campaign.
Webhook to your collections toolPromise-to-pay dates, reason codes and right-party status go to your webhook, so field collectors see updated priorities each morning.
Live Google Sheet of accountsA sheet shared with your team receives each outcome as a row, which suits small lenders without a collections platform.
WhatsApp payment linkWhen a verified borrower asks for it, the agent sends your own UPI or payment page link during the call.

Results go back out the same way: a webhook you provide, or a live spreadsheet or API call mid-call. WhatsApp messages and calendar bookings are opt-in per employee.

Run it well

What to track — and what goes wrong

TrackHow to read it
Right-party contact rateLow numbers mean wrong or stale phone data; fix the source list before changing the script.
Promise-to-pay keptCompare dates promised on calls to actual payments; a gap shows which bucket needs a human follow-up.
Reason codes by bucketMany salary delay answers suggest shifting the call date, while disputes point to a servicing problem.
Complaints or stop-calling requestsA rising count is a signal to review tone, windows and frequency before it becomes a compliance issue.
Common mistakes
  • !Stating the loan or amount before confirming the speaker is the borrower, which breaches privacy.
  • !Calling outside permitted hours instead of keeping within a fixed window of 8 am to 7 pm.
  • !Using one script for every bucket, when early reminders and long overdue accounts need very different tone.
  • !Not capturing a reason for delay, which leaves field staff with no context for the next conversation.
Not the right tool when

It should not be used for hardship negotiations, restructuring or anything that needs authority to change loan terms. Disputed or sensitive cases belong with a trained collections officer from the start.

Questions people ask

What do RBI rules say about EMI collection calls?

+

RBI's instructions on recovery agents require lenders to ensure borrowers are not called before 8 am or after 7 pm, and prohibit intimidation, abusive language, threats and harassment, including contacting family or friends to shame the borrower. The lender stays responsible for anyone calling on its behalf. Configure the calling window and script to match, and review recordings as you would for a human team.

Should the AI share loan details before verifying the borrower?

+

No. The agent first confirms it is speaking to the borrower, for example by name plus the last digits of the loan account or a date of birth you supply. If someone else picks up, it only asks when the borrower can be reached and reveals nothing about the loan, which avoids disclosing a debt to a third party.

What if the borrower says they lost their job and cannot pay?

+

The agent stays courteous, records the reason as a code and in the borrower's own words, and asks whether they would like a callback from the lender about options. It does not offer restructuring or settlements unless you have written those terms into its instructions. Hardship cases are flagged in the webhook so a trained person handles them.

Which buckets suit an AI agent?

+

Pre-due reminders and early buckets, up to about 30 days past due, suit it best, because most of those borrowers intend to pay and need a reminder and a link. Later buckets involve negotiation and judgment, where a trained human collector is the better fit. Many lenders use the AI to clear volume so their people can focus on the harder accounts.

Can it call borrowers in their own language?

+

Yes, in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, switching to English mid-sentence when the borrower does. Set the language per campaign or per region in your list. Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi and Odia are not available yet, so borrowers in those regions should be called in Hindi or English, or by your own team.

How much does an AI voice agent for EMI collection cost?

+

Outpero has no setup fee and no monthly base fee — you pay only for connected talk time, from ₹5 per minute (1 credit = ₹1, credits never expire), plus ₹649/month for a dedicated calling number. You pay only for the minutes the agent is actually talking. Prices exclude 18% GST.
