What AI customer support on the phone covers
Most support calls in Indian consumer businesses are a small set of questions asked thousands of times: where is my order, how do I return this, when will the technician come, why was I charged twice. The answers are in a database or a policy document. What is missing is someone to pick up and look.
An AI support agent picks up, looks — through your API or a spreadsheet — and answers. When the problem needs a decision a person must make, it logs a structured complaint and tells the customer what happens next. It also makes the outbound calls support teams rarely get to: confirming a fix, checking satisfaction, chasing a missing document.
Inbound: what the agent handles
- —Order and service status, read live from your system through a custom API or a spreadsheet lookup
- —Policy questions — return windows, warranty terms, cancellation charges, refund timelines — answered from your written instructions
- —Complaint logging with the fields you specify: order ID, category, description, severity, preferred callback time
- —Rescheduling a technician or delivery slot in a connected calendar
- —A WhatsApp message during or after the call with a complaint reference or a return link
Outbound: follow-ups that close the loop
- —Order status calls when a shipment is delayed, before the customer has to chase you
- —Failed-delivery and NDR calls to fix an address or get a new delivery time
- —Callbacks after a complaint is resolved, to confirm it actually is
- —CSAT and NPS calls a few days after delivery or service
- —Service alerts to many customers at once by voice broadcast, where no reply is needed

| Delivery delay update | Outbound | List of affected orders | Strong |
| Post-resolution callback and CSAT | Outbound | List of closed tickets | Strong |
| Approving a refund exception | Inbound | Human judgement | Poor — capture and flag |
| Technical troubleshooting with many steps | Inbound | Detailed scripts, patient caller | Partial |
| Angry escalation demanding a manager | Inbound | A person, live | Fair — transfer to your team where it applies |
Industries
E-commerce and D2C brands use it for order status, COD and returns. Broadband and telecom providers use it for outage questions and technician visits. Home services and appliance companies use it for service-request booking and follow-up. Banks, NBFCs and insurers use it for status questions on applications and claims, keeping disputes with their human grievance team. Hospitals and diagnostic labs use it for report-ready calls and billing questions.
Languages
Hear it on a real call before you read further?
A support line that answers only in English loses a large share of customers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, who often call precisely because they could not follow an English email. Outpero's agent speaks Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, switching to English mid-sentence when the customer does.
നമസ്കാരം, നിങ്ങളുടെ order number പറയാമോ? ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ തന്നെ status check ചെയ്യാം.
How it works on Outpero
- 01Write the support instructions: policies, tone, what the agent may promise, and what it must flag.
- 02Connect live data through a custom API call or a spreadsheet the agent reads during the call.
- 03Define the complaint fields to capture and point the webhook at your helpdesk, CRM or a WhatsApp alert.
- 04Take a dedicated number for inbound support at ₹649/month, and set up outbound follow-ups as bulk campaigns from CSV lists.
- 05Review recordings, transcripts and sentiment in the dashboard weekly, and tighten instructions where callers got stuck.
Cost
Outpero charges per connected minute — ₹5 or ₹6.8 by voice tier — from prepaid credits, with no setup fee, no monthly base fee and no contract. A human telecaller in India costs roughly ₹15,000–₹25,000 a month and handles one call at a time on one shift. For a brand taking 3,000 two-minute support calls a month, AI handling on the Standard voice is about ₹30,000 in talk time, available around the clock; compare that against the staff hours those calls currently take.
Compliance
Inbound support calls are customer-initiated, so DND does not apply to answering them; outbound follow-ups that are purely about an existing order or service are service calls, while anything promotional falls under TRAI's TCCCP rules. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 require e-commerce entities to acknowledge complaints within 48 hours and resolve them within a month — an AI agent that logs every complaint with a timestamp helps evidence that. Handle recordings and personal data under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
How to evaluate an AI support vendor
- —Ask how the agent reads live order data, and test it with a real order ID.
- —Ask what the agent says when it cannot help, and read that transcript.
- —Measure containment rate and first-call resolution in a pilot, not just call volume.
- —Check that complaints reach your helpdesk with every field filled, via webhook.
- —Confirm uptime commitments; Outpero offers a 99.9% uptime SLA and 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average of conversational latency.
Limits
Outpero can transfer a call to your team when a person should take it. Otherwise, when someone insists on a human, the agent captures the issue, urgency and callback time and flags it in the summary and webhook, so your team should commit to a fast callback for flagged calls. Businesses whose support is mostly disputes, negotiations or sensitive grievances should keep those with people.
