Voice AI for BFSI in India: Collections, KYC and Lead Follow-Up

Voice AI for BFSI is an AI voice agent that calls or answers customers of a bank, NBFC, insurer or broker to follow up leads, chase KYC documents, remind about EMIs and premiums and handle routine questions, in the customer's own language. It works best on repeatable, scripted calls and badly on disputes and advice. This guide maps the use cases across the customer journey, the RBI and IRDAI limits that shape them and which type of vendor fits which size of institution.

Disclosure

Outpero publishes this post and sells an AI voice agent. Facts about other vendors come from their own websites, read on 2026-10-14, and are labelled as the vendor's claim where they are claims. The post gives criteria and a test method so you can check any vendor, Outpero included, for yourself. Outpero is a self-serve product and is not built for regulated enterprise deployments with audited certifications, a point the vendor section returns to.

Why BFSI is the heaviest user of phone calls

A bank, NBFC or insurer talks to the same customer many times: when they enquire, when they apply, when documents are due, before every EMI or premium, when a payment is missed and when a policy or loan ends. Most of these calls are repeatable, time-bound and scripted. That is the profile where voice AI earns its place.

India adds a language layer. A borrower in Nashik, a policyholder in Warangal and a savings customer in Coimbatore each expect the call in their language, with English words for terms such as EMI, premium, KYC and OTP. A voice agent that handles only English or formal Hindi leaves a large share of the customer base to a human queue that is never large enough.

Speed matters at the front of the funnel. A lead from a loan comparison portal or a Meta lead ad is warm for minutes. Outpero's instant lead calling dials a new enquiry within 30 seconds of it arriving, which is faster than a human team can be at 8 p.m. or on a Sunday.

Collections without crossing the line

Collections is where voice AI is most useful and most sensitive. The useful part is the pre-due and early-overdue reminder: a polite call in the borrower's language that states the amount, the date and how to pay. The sensitive part is anything that feels like pressure.

The RBI's Fair Practices Code expects lenders to behave courteously, avoid harassment and keep contact within reasonable hours, commonly cited as 8 am to 7 pm for recovery contact. A lender remains responsible for the conduct of any agent or vendor acting for it, human or AI. Confirm the exact current text with your compliance team before you set calling windows.

Practical rules for an AI collections caller follow from that.

  • —Keep the tone of a reminder, never of a threat. No mention of legal action, family or employers.
  • —Call only inside the permitted window and honour requests to stop or call back.
  • —Offer a payment link by WhatsApp during or right after the call, and a promise-to-pay date.
  • —Transfer to a human, or schedule a callback, the moment the borrower mentions hardship, a dispute or bereavement.
  • —Record and log every call. The transcript is your evidence of what was said.
नमस्ते, मैं Raghav Finance से बोल रहा हूँ। आपकी ₹6,400 की EMI इस शुक्रवार को due है। क्या मैं आपको WhatsApp पर payment link भेज दूँ?
— Hindi reminder with English words mixed in. Translation: Hello, I am calling from Raghav Finance. Your EMI of ₹6,400 is due this Friday. Shall I send you a payment link on WhatsApp?

Outpero can send that WhatsApp message during or after the call, log the outcome with the fields you define and pass the record to your system through a webhook. Unanswered calls are not billed.

KYC and document chasing

Many loan and account applications stall not on credit decisions but on a missing document or an incomplete step. A voice agent can call, explain exactly what is pending, in which language the customer prefers, and offer the quickest way to finish it.

The agent should chase, not verify. The regulated verification steps remain within your KYC process and your regulator's rules. What the call adds is a reminder that arrives while the customer still remembers applying, and a record of the customer's reason when they do not complete.

Want to hear this working, not just read about it?

Use cases that map directly: document collection follow-up, KYC completion calls and loan application follow-up. Each is a short, scripted call with two or three captured fields.

Lead follow-up for banks, NBFCs, insurers and brokers

Aggregator leads, ad leads and website forms arrive in bursts and go cold quickly. A voice agent calls each within 30 seconds, confirms interest and the product, asks two qualifying questions such as loan amount and city, and books a callback with a relationship manager. The humans then spend their time on interested customers rather than on dialling.

For insurers, renewal and lapse-prevention calls follow a calendar the business already knows. For brokers and wealth firms, event reminders and onboarding calls follow the same pattern. IRDAI and SEBI rules govern what can be said about products and returns, so the agent should qualify and book, not advise.

Inbound: the service desk that never closes

Customers also call you. A policyholder wants a renewal date, a borrower wants a foreclosure quote or a payment confirmation, a prospect rings the number on your hoarding at 9 p.m. Outpero's inbound mode answers the business number 24/7, handles the enquiry, qualifies it and logs everything, and it remembers returning callers so a second call continues the first.

The line to draw is between information and decisions. The agent can read out a due date or book a callback. It should transfer to your team for a complaint, a suspected fraud report or a request that needs an authorised person, and the transfer should carry the conversation so far so the customer does not repeat themselves.

Rules that shape every BFSI call

  • —RBI: fair practices on collection, disclosure and outsourcing. The regulated entity stays accountable for the vendor.
  • —IRDAI: standards on how insurance is solicited and serviced, including what may be promised.
  • —SEBI: restrictions on how investment products are described to investors.
  • —TRAI: DLT registration, DND screening and number series for commercial and transactional calls. Check which number series applies to regulated financial entities for service and transactional calls.
  • —The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023: consent, purpose limits and care of call recordings.

This list is a pointer to topics for your compliance team, not legal advice. The right approach is to write the rules into the script as hard limits and test them with adversarial calls before launch.

Which type of vendor fits which institution

Voice AI vendors for BFSI fall into three broad groups, and the right one depends on the size of the institution and the certifications procurement requires.

Vendor typeExamples and verified factsBest for
Enterprise voice AIGnani names nine Indian languages and lists SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA and PCI-DSS, with cloud, private cloud, on-premise and air-gapped options (its claims). Pricing is not published.Banks and large NBFCs with security audits
Collections specialistSkit.ai focuses on debt collection and lists SOC 2 Type II, PCI-DSS and ISO 27001, with sales-led pilots of about 4 to 6 weeks. Convin has a dedicated AI collections product, an agent-assist and quality platform and on-premise deployment.Lenders with large collections volume
Self-serve voice agentOutpero: Standard ₹5 or Premium ₹6.8 per connected minute, no setup fee, seven languages, instant lead calling, bulk campaigns, inbound mode, WhatsApp during the call, transfer to your team.Small NBFCs, co-operative lenders, insurance agencies, broker and DSA teams

Outpero is not the right choice for an institution that needs on-premise deployment, certifications on a procurement checklist or languages such as Bengali, Gujarati or Punjabi. Those buyers should look at the enterprise group. For smaller lenders, agencies and distributors, a pilot costs little: 50 free credits at signup, no card, and ₹5 per connected minute at Standard, excluding 18% GST.

A first 30 days for a small lender or agency

  1. 01Pick one stage from the journey table. For most, it is the pre-due EMI reminder or the instant lead call.
  2. 02Write the script with your compliance owner. Include the stop conditions and the human-transfer triggers.
  3. 03Test in the customer's language with 10 calls to staff, including difficult ones: a borrower who is angry, one who disputes the amount, one who asks if the caller is a robot.
  4. 04Run a pilot on a small list of 50 to 100 contacts, with someone listening to recordings the same day.
  5. 05Widen the list. Set calling windows, retries and DND screening, and review a weekly sample of transcripts.

Judge success on the business metrics you already track: contacts reached, promises to pay logged, documents received, callbacks booked. Avoid quoting uplift percentages from anyone, including vendors, until you have your own pilot data.

Frequently asked questions

What is voice AI for BFSI?

+

Voice AI for BFSI is an AI voice agent that calls or answers customers of banks, NBFCs, insurers and brokers. It follows up leads, chases KYC documents, sends EMI and premium reminders and answers routine questions in the customer's language, logging each call and passing sensitive cases to a human.

Can an AI voice agent make EMI collection calls legally in India?

+

Reminder and collection calls are allowed, but the lender stays accountable under RBI's fair-practice expectations, including courteous conduct and reasonable calling hours, commonly cited as 8 am to 7 pm. TRAI rules also apply. Confirm the current requirements with your compliance team before you launch.

Can voice AI complete KYC?

+

It can chase KYC: remind customers, explain what is pending and offer the quickest way to finish. The regulated verification itself should stay inside your approved KYC process. The agent's value is timing, language and a record of why a customer did not complete the step.

Which Indian languages does voice AI for BFSI need?

+

At least the languages of your customers, plus the English mixed into them. Outpero covers Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English at one per-minute price. Gnani and SquadStack name Bengali and Gujarati too, so check your exact language list against each vendor.

How much does voice AI cost for a small lender?

+

Outpero charges ₹5 per connected minute at Standard or ₹6.8 at Premium, excluding 18% GST, with no setup fee, and 50 free credits at signup. A +91 number costs ₹649 per month including one channel. Enterprise vendors usually quote after a demo, so compare on your monthly call volume.

When should voice AI not be used in BFSI?

+

Avoid it for disputes, fraud reports, hardship cases, grievance redressal and any conversation that amounts to personalised investment or insurance advice. Set the agent to transfer or schedule a human callback when it detects those topics, and test that behaviour before launch.
