Best AI Voice Agents for Loans and NBFCs in India (2026)

The best AI voice agent for a lender in India handles three jobs well: calling loan enquiries within seconds, chasing missing documents patiently, and sending EMI reminders in the borrower's language, all within RBI conduct limits and handing anything contentious to a human. It should qualify and remind, never advise or threaten. Outpero publishes this guide, so test every vendor, ours included.

Disclosure

Outpero sells an AI voice agent and publishes this guide. Facts about other vendors come from their public pages as checked on 14 October 2026. This is general information, not legal or financial advice. A regulated lender must take its own compliance advice on calling, outsourcing and recovery.

How lenders actually use the phone in India

A loan enquiry is one of the most time-sensitive leads a business receives. Applicants often apply to several lenders at once, through a lender's own app, Meta and Google ads, DSAs and marketplaces such as BankBazaar and Paisabazaar, and the lender that calls first usually shapes the application. After the lead, the phone is also the main tool for chasing documents and reminding borrowers about EMIs.

Three call types dominate, and they have different risk. Enquiry calls are sales calls: they qualify income, employment and loan amount. Document chase calls are service calls for an application in progress. EMI and payment reminders are service calls to an existing borrower. Recovery of overdue amounts is a fourth type, and it is where conduct rules bite hardest.

Seasons matter. Festive demand around Dhanteras and Diwali drives consumer, two-wheeler and personal loans. April and the March year-end bring MSME working-capital and tax-driven enquiries. Gold loans and microfinance follow the agricultural cycle, with demand rising around kharif sowing in June and rabi in October and November. Collections peak in the days before and after the due date.

What the regulator expects of the call

The Reserve Bank of India's Fair Practices Code expects lenders to communicate in a language the borrower understands, to treat borrowers with courtesy and to avoid harassment, including calls at inconvenient hours. The commonly cited window for recovery contact is 8 am to 7 pm. The lender remains responsible for what a service provider does on its behalf, which includes an AI voice vendor.

RBI's digital lending rules add disclosure expectations, such as key fact statements that state the annual percentage rate and charges, and clarity about who the lender is. TRAI's rules on unsolicited commercial communication still apply to promotional calls, and TRAI has asked regulated financial entities to use a dedicated 160-series number for service and transactional calls. Ask your telecom provider and your counsel what applies to your set-up.

The line between a reminder and recovery

A friendly reminder three days before the due date is a service call. A first nudge a day after a missed payment is still reasonable. Repeated calls to a borrower in genuine default, threats, calls to family or colleagues and shaming are not, whoever makes them. Many lenders keep an AI agent for pre-due reminders and early soft follow-up, then hand accounts beyond a set number of days to a human collections team. That is a sensible design, not a limitation.

A test script for your compliance and credit teams

Ask your compliance officer to sit in on the demo. The opening line below suits a Kochi-based NBFC, a region with a deep gold-loan and personal-loan market, and keeps the English terms borrowers use.

Want to hear this working, not just read about it?

— Opening line, Malayalam. In English: Hello, I am calling from Sahyadri Finance. You enquired about a personal loan. Roughly how much do you need?
  1. 01Ask 'Will my loan be approved?' The agent must not promise. It should say the team will assess and ask for the missing details.
  2. 02Ask for the interest rate. It should quote only what you have approved, and point to the key fact statement for the exact annual percentage rate and charges.
  3. 03Say it is not a convenient time. It should offer a specific time inside the permitted window and honour it.
  4. 04Mix Malayalam and English around 'salary slip', 'CIBIL' and 'EMI'. The voice should stay steady with no restart.
  5. 05Say you are in financial difficulty and cannot pay this month. A good agent responds with courtesy, records the situation and transfers to a person, instead of pressing.
  6. 06Say 'stop calling me'. Check the number is blocked from every campaign immediately.
  7. 07Open the transcript and recording. Confirm the disclosure line, timestamps and captured fields are all present.

Worked arithmetic: a month for a mid-size NBFC

An illustration with stated assumptions, not a result. The lender receives 2,000 loan enquiries, has 5,000 accounts due on the 5th, and has 400 applications stuck on documents. Assume 60% of enquiry calls connect at 3 minutes each, 70% of EMI reminders connect at 1 minute, and document-chase calls connect 60% of the time at 1.5 minutes over three attempts per file.

LineWorkingAmount
Enquiry calls2,000 × 60% × 3 min = 3,600 min × ₹5₹18,000
EMI reminders5,000 × 70% × 1 min = 3,500 min × ₹5₹17,500
Document chase400 files × 3 attempts × 60% × 1.5 min = 1,080 min × ₹5₹5,400
5 channels (1 included, 4 extra at ₹649)₹649 + ₹2,596₹3,245
Total before GST₹18,000 + ₹17,500 + ₹5,400 + ₹3,245₹44,145
With 18% GST₹44,145 × 1.18about ₹52,091
Two human telecallers, one shift each, for comparison2 × ₹18,000about ₹36,000

Read the comparison honestly. The automated option here costs more than two telecallers, so cost is not the argument. Coverage is. At roughly 55 dials per channel per hour, 5,000 EMI dials need about 18 hours on five channels, or two working days inside an 8 am to 7 pm window. Two people on one line each would take weeks to make the same calls, and some borrowers would not be reached before the due date.

The other number to watch is cost per lead: ₹18,000 across 2,000 enquiries is ₹9 each in calling cost. Your own conversion rates will decide whether that is cheap. Measure completed applications per 100 enquiries before and after, using the same lead sources.

Where Outpero fits, and where it does not

Outpero is a self-serve AI voice agent from a specialist in regional-language voice AI. It speaks Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English, switching to English as the borrower does. It dials new enquiries within 30 seconds, runs scheduled campaigns with calling windows, retries and DND screening, chases documents, sends EMI reminders, books a callback with a relationship manager, and can transfer a call to your team. Every call has a recording, transcript and summary. Standard is ₹5 a minute, Premium ₹6.8, no setup fee.

It fits NBFCs, DSAs, microfinance and gold-loan firms and smaller banks that want enquiry, document and reminder calls in many languages. It is not the right tool for every lender. Gnani offers on-premise and air-gapped deployment and names nine Indian languages including Bengali, Gujarati and Punjabi, which suits banks with strict data-residency needs. Skit.ai is built specifically for debt collection, though the guardrails it lists are US ones such as FDCPA and TCPA. Convin offers a collections product and conversation intelligence for contact centres. For hard recovery, use a purpose-built product and your own compliance process.

A sensible rollout order

Start with the call that carries the least conduct risk and add the next only when the transcripts look clean. Most lenders begin with new-enquiry calls, move to document chasing, and add pre-due reminders last, with a human team staying on all disputes.

  1. 01Weeks one and two: enquiry calls on one product, such as personal loans, with your sales head reading transcripts daily.
  2. 02Weeks three and four: document-chase calls on files already in your system, capped at three attempts per file.
  3. 03Month two: reminder calls three days before the due date, in the borrower's language, with a transfer rule for any mention of hardship or dispute.
  4. 04Month three: review opt-outs, complaints and escalations with compliance before widening to more products or states.

Compliance checklist before you go live

  • —Give the agent a written script boundary: qualify, collect documents, remind. No approvals, no personalised advice, no threats.
  • —Set calling windows to 8 am to 7 pm, or tighter, and enforce them in the campaign settings.
  • —Disclose who is calling and on whose behalf in the first sentence, and that the call is recorded.
  • —Use the borrower's preferred language where it is supported, and avoid mixing in terms the borrower does not use.
  • —Screen against DND for promotional enquiry campaigns and keep consent records from every lead source.
  • —Log every opt-out and hardship statement, and route both to a human within a day.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI voice agent make EMI reminder calls in India?

+

Yes. Reminder calls before and just after the due date are a common use. Outpero places them in the borrower's language, within the calling windows you set, and logs the outcome. Keep it to reminders and early follow-up, and hand genuine default to a human team under your recovery policy.

Is it allowed to use AI for loan recovery calls?

+

It is not banned by a single rule, but RBI's Fair Practices Code governs the conduct, whoever makes the call, and the lender stays responsible for its service providers. Avoid threats, odd hours and contacting third parties. Take your own legal advice before using AI for recovery.

How much does AI calling cost for a mid-size NBFC?

+

In the worked example, enquiry, document-chase and EMI calls plus five channels come to ₹44,145 a month before 18% GST, about ₹52,091 with it, at Standard ₹5 a minute. Your pickup rates, call lengths and account counts will change this, so run your own numbers.

Can the agent approve a loan or quote an interest rate?

+

It should not approve anything. Credit decisions belong to your policy and officers. It can state a rate only if you have approved that wording, and it should point the borrower to the key fact statement for exact charges. Put these limits in the brief and test them.

Which languages can it use with borrowers?

+

Outpero speaks Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English at the same per-minute price, and switches to English mid-sentence. Languages outside those seven are not supported, including Bengali, Gujarati and Punjabi, so check your portfolio's language mix before choosing a vendor.

What happens if a borrower says they cannot pay?

+

Brief the agent to respond courteously, record the situation and transfer to a person instead of pressing. Outpero can transfer the call to your team and logs the transcript. Decide in advance who follows up within a day and how hardship cases are treated.
