Malayalam AI Voice Agent for Gold Loan and NBFC Follow-Ups in Kerala

A Malayalam AI voice agent suits gold-loan and NBFC work in Kerala when the job is a reminder or a follow-up: it calls a new enquiry within about 30 seconds, reminds a borrower that a renewal or EMI date is near, and records a promised payment date, all in Malayalam and Manglish. It is not a collections enforcer. Compliance with RBI fair-practices rules, calling hours, consent and the do-not-call list stays with the lender, and the agent is set up to stay inside the limits the lender chooses.

Compliance stays with the lender

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Rules from the RBI, TRAI and other regulators change, and each lender's obligations depend on its licence and policies. Outpero provides calling tools and controls; the lender decides whom to call, when, and what is said, and answers for it. Have compliance and legal teams review scripts before any live campaign.

Why Kerala is a gold-loan and NBFC market like no other

Several of India's best-known gold-loan lenders are headquartered in Thrissur and Kochi, and branches sit on most town junctions across the state. Households in Kerala hold gold as savings and use it as collateral for short-term cash, school fees, hospital bills and Gulf-return plans. Gold is quoted in pavan, a unit of 8 grams, rather than in grams.

That produces a very high volume of small, repetitive phone work: enquiries from people who want to know how much a given number of pavan can raise, interest due dates, renewals when a loan term ends, EMI reminders on the NBFC's vehicle and personal loans, and lapsed customers who have not been in touch for months. Branch staff spend a large part of the day on these calls.

Four jobs an AI voice agent can do for a Kerala lender

JobHow it sounds on the callWhat the agent recordsWhat to cap or switch off
Enquiry follow-up on a new leadCalls within about 30 seconds of a form or ad lead (the speed depends on how quickly the lead source delivers it), asks roughly how many pavan and which branch is convenient, and books a visitPavan range, branch, preferred day and time, and a flag if the caller wants a call from a personQuotes no loan amount; says the exact figure follows the branch's gold check and the lender's rate
Interest-due and renewal reminderConfirms the borrower's name first, then reminds that the renewal date is near and asks when a branch visit suitsPromised visit date, reason for delay, best time to call backMax attempts per day, a narrow calling window and no calls on holidays you list
EMI reminder on an NBFC loanA courteous reminder of the due date and amount held in the contact file, and a question about when payment will be madePromised payment date, reason, any dispute raisedNo mention of penalties, collateral action or legal steps unless the lender's approved script includes them
Lapsed-customer reactivationAsks if the customer needs a loan or a top-up now and offers to book a branch visitInterest level and callback timeRespect the do-not-call list and stop on first refusal

What a Malayalam gold-loan call sounds like

Customers say 'gold loan', 'renewal', 'interest', 'EMI' and 'branch' in English and wrap them in Malayalam grammar, with 'പലിശ' for interest and 'പണയം' for the pledge. The first thing the agent does is confirm the person, never the loan. An imaginary lender's call might run like this, with the English beneath.

  • —Agent: നമസ്കാരം, ഞാൻ Example Gold Finance-ന്റെ AI assistant ആണ്. രാജു സാറാണോ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്? (Namaskaram, I am the AI assistant of Example Gold Finance. Is Raju sir speaking?)
  • —Caller: അതെ, പറഞ്ഞോളൂ. (Yes, go ahead.)
  • —Agent: സാറിന്റെ gold loan renewal-ന്റെ date അടുത്ത ആഴ്ചയാണ്. branch-ൽ വരാൻ എപ്പോഴാണ് സൗകര്യം? (Sir's gold loan renewal date is next week. When is it convenient to come to the branch?)
  • —Caller: ഇപ്പോൾ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണ്, വൈകിട്ട് വിളിക്കാമോ? (It is difficult now; can you call in the evening?)

When a caller asks for a callback at a specific time and the Smart follow-ups switch is on, the follow-up is booked for that time and carries the details captured earlier. That switch is off by default and also turns on caller memory, so decide on it deliberately.

The compliance map: what the lender decides

RBI fair-practices expectations

RBI rules for banks and NBFCs expect fair, non-coercive treatment of borrowers, including reasonable contact hours and no harassment, intimidation or misleading statements in recovery calls. The exact wording and the specific hours differ by circular and by lender policy and are updated from time to time. Take the current text from the RBI's own circulars and your compliance team, not from this page.

Outpero's platform limits bulk campaigns to 9 am to 9 pm and instant-lead calls to 6 am to 10 pm, and a customer can only narrow those windows. A lender should narrow them much further to match its own policy, and also set holidays and calling days.

Reminder versus recovery

A reminder is information: the date, the amount in the contact file and a courteous question about when payment will be made. Recovery is pressure about overdue dues, and it carries the heaviest regulatory risk. Keep the agent on the reminder side. It should not threaten, shame, mention family members, discuss auction or legal action beyond a lender-approved sentence, or call repeatedly in a day.

Consent, DND and the do-not-call list

  • —Outpero has an account-level do-not-call list enforced at import, when a lead arrives and at dial time. A caller who clearly opts out is added automatically, and an unclear request notifies the owner.
  • —There is no automatic scrub against the national do-not-call registry. The lender is responsible for checking that registry and for the rules TRAI sets for promotional and service calls.
  • —A consent attestation is required before launching a campaign or connecting a lead source. Treat it as a real statement of fact, not a click-through.
  • —A recording notice can be played before the greeting if calls are recorded.

Identity and privacy on shared phones

In Kerala the person who answers is often a spouse, a parent or a child, and many borrowers' families have someone abroad. The script should confirm the borrower's name first and disclose nothing about the loan to anyone else. If someone else answers, the agent should offer to call back and end politely. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, the lender is responsible for handling this data lawfully.

Setting it up so the agent stays inside the lines

  • —Put the due date and amount in the contact file as variables and have the agent read them back, rather than letting it calculate. The agent speaks from {{name}}, {{due_date}} and {{amount}} columns, and a custom API action that fetches live dues should be tested hard because its raw response is spoken as received.
  • —Cap attempts with the retry settings: for example one attempt per day and a total that matches your policy, with the retry gap set so calls do not bunch up.
  • —Choose calling windows to match your own policy and the RBI guidance, and set holidays and Sundays as you prefer.
  • —Write a call-end rule: the agent ends politely on any refusal, on any complaint about harassment, and on any mention of a bereavement.
  • —Send the outcome to the loan system through a post-call webhook, with signing turned on, so staff see a promised date and a flag instead of a transcript.
  • —If the lender wants a payment link sent, an approved WhatsApp template through its own provider account can carry a link supplied as a text variable. The agent does not take payment on the call.

A worked month for a mid-size lender in Kerala

Illustrative arithmetic, not a quote. A lender sends 1,200 renewal and EMI reminders, each connected call lasting about 1.5 minutes. That is 1,800 connected minutes, or ₹9,000 at ₹5 a minute on Standard voices. Add ₹649 for the number and the total is ₹9,649.

GST at 18% adds about ₹1,737 for roughly ₹11,386 for the month. Calls that go unanswered are not billed. A branch employee at the ₹18,000 reference figure costs more than the whole reminder run, and that person is free to handle customers who walk in.

Honest limits

  • —It does not take payments, read OTPs or complete KYC on the call; it can only book a visit or note a promise.
  • —It dials Indian numbers only, so a borrower's family member abroad on a foreign number cannot be reached.
  • —Dialect varies from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod. Outpero uses a neutral spoken register, not per-dialect training, so pilot with your own borrowers from each district.
  • —Voicemail detection is tuned for English greetings, so a Malayalam voicemail message may be missed.
  • —Seven languages are supported; Tamil-speaking borrowers on the Tamil Nadu border need a separate agent or a second language setting, and Tulu is not supported.
  • —Whether a call counts as promotional, transactional or service is a regulatory question for the lender's counsel, not something the software decides.

A cautious rollout

  1. 01Begin with enquiry follow-up, which carries the least regulatory risk, and read transcripts for two weeks.
  2. 02Add renewal reminders to a small group of borrowers who have agreed to be contacted, with one attempt a day.
  3. 03Have compliance read ten transcripts and approve the script before widening.
  4. 04Add EMI reminders only once the approved script, the calling window and the opt-out handling have held up in the earlier steps.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Malayalam AI voice agent make gold-loan renewal and EMI reminder calls?

+

Yes. It calls from an uploaded list, confirms the borrower's name, reminds them of a renewal or EMI date held in the contact file and asks when a visit or payment will happen. It records the promised date and any reason for delay. It does not take payment on the call, and the lender controls the script, windows and attempt limits.

Who is responsible for RBI compliance on these calls?

+

The lender. Outpero provides the calling tools, windows, retry caps, a do-not-call list and a consent attestation, but the lender decides whom to call, when, and what is said, and answers to its regulators. Rules change, so check current RBI and TRAI circulars with your compliance team. This is general information, not legal advice.

Does the agent check the national do-not-call registry automatically?

+

No. Outpero keeps an account-level do-not-call list, enforced at import, at lead arrival and at dial time, and adds a caller who clearly opts out. It does not scrub numbers against the national registry automatically. The lender must check that registry and follow TRAI's rules for the type of call it is making.

Can it handle pavan-based gold enquiries in Malayalam?

+

Yes for the conversation. It understands amounts such as ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ച് പവൻ, asks which branch suits and books a visit. It should not quote a loan amount, because that depends on purity, the day's rate and lender policy; the script should say the branch will confirm after checking the gold.

What does it cost for an NBFC or gold-loan firm?

+

Calls are ₹5 a connected minute on Standard voices or ₹6.8 on Premium, with no setup fee and no subscription; the number is ₹649 a month with one channel. As an illustration, 1,200 reminders of 1.5 minutes come to about ₹11,386 with 18% GST. Unanswered calls are not billed. Custom or enterprise plans for high volumes are quoted separately.

How should a lender pilot it safely?

+

Start with enquiry follow-up, not collections. Use the 50 free credits for test calls, set one attempt a day and a narrow calling window, and have compliance read ten transcripts before widening. Add renewal and EMI reminders for a small consenting group next, and keep every script free of pressure or threats.
