What do TRAI's 2026 rules on automated and AI voice calls require?
The binding framework for automated and AI voice calls remains TRAI's TCCCP Regulations 2018 and their amendments: DLT-registered senders, the right number series, DND screening and consent. This page does not state clause-level detail of any 2026 change, because summaries go stale. Read the current text on trai.gov.in or ask your telecom operator or counsel.
What can be said with confidence
TRAI regulates commercial communication through the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations 2018, usually shortened to TCCCP 2018, and later amendments and directions. These apply to the call, not to the technology behind it, so a recorded call, an auto dialer and an AI voice agent are judged by the same framework when the call is commercial.
The building blocks that have stayed constant
| Building block | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| DLT registration | Senders and their headers are registered on operator DLT platforms |
| Number series | Promotional and service or transactional calls are expected to use the series meant for them, not an ordinary mobile number |
| Preference registers | Customers can register on DND and ask not to receive categories of commercial calls |
| Consent | A record of consent matters where a number is on DND or the call needs permission |
| Complaints | Customers can report unwanted calls, and senders are expected to act on opt-outs |
What this page deliberately leaves out
Rules on automated and AI-generated calls are evolving. No clause number, penalty, timeline or definition of an AI call is stated here, because quoting them from memory or from secondary sources risks being wrong. Primary sources are the TRAI website, official gazette notifications and your operator's circulars.
A practical way to stay ahead of changes
- —Keep a record of why each number can be called and when consent was given.
- —Screen lists against DND before every campaign.
- —Say who is calling and why in the first sentence of the call.
- —Honour opt-outs immediately and log them.
- —Keep recordings and call logs so any complaint can be answered with facts.
Outpero's calls run on a DLT-registered line, bulk campaigns screen against DND, and every call is recorded with a transcript and summary. Compliance is still shared: the business decides whom to call and under what category, so confirm each campaign with your operator or counsel.
