Kannada AI Calling Agent: How It Works and What to Test
A Kannada AI calling agent is software that phones people, or answers their calls, and holds a spoken conversation in Kannada: it hears the caller, decides what to say, replies in a synthetic voice and writes up the call, in 0.8 to 1.3 seconds on average on Outpero. A demo cannot show whether it works. Ten test calls on spoken Kannada, Kanglish, numbers, names and interruptions can, and they are listed below, along with a short note on what IVR means in Kannada and why a voice agent replaces the menu.
How a Kannada AI calling agent works, step by step
Every AI calling agent runs the same loop many times in a call. What differs between products is how well each step copes with Kannada as people actually speak it on the phone.
- 01The call connects. For outbound, the agent dials a number from a lead, a CSV list or a schedule. For inbound, it picks up a call to your business number. Dialling and answering both run on an Indian calling line.
- 02Speech recognition turns the caller's audio into text. This is the step Kannada makes hardest: the model must separate Kannada suffixes, English nouns and background noise on a line that may be a poor mobile signal on a road.
- 03A language model reads the text with the script, the knowledge you gave it and anything it remembers about the caller, and decides what to say or do next, such as answering a question or booking a slot.
- 04Speech synthesis speaks the answer in a Kannada voice. Outpero's voice engine is called Swara, and it can switch voice to English when the caller does.
- 05The agent listens while it talks. If the caller cuts in, it stops and listens, which is what makes a conversation feel natural and not like a recording.
- 06After the call, the system stores a recording, a transcript, a summary, an outcome and the fields you asked it to capture, and can send them to your webhook or send a WhatsApp message.
A Kannada speech AI model, one that only converts audio to text, is step two on its own. A calling agent needs all six, and a weakness at any step shows up as a wrong answer, a long silence or a customer who hangs up.
Why 0.8 to 1.3 seconds is the number to watch
Latency is the gap between the caller finishing a sentence and the agent starting to reply. On Outpero it averages 0.8 to 1.3 seconds end to end. In human conversation the pause between turns is brief, and beyond roughly two seconds callers say hello again, talk over the reply or assume the line dropped.
Measure it yourself with a stopwatch on a real phone line, because vendors measure it in different places. A figure quoted for the model alone is not the same as the gap a caller hears. The glossary entry on latency explains the parts that add up.
Spoken Kannada, written Kannada and Kanglish
Written Kannada and spoken Kannada differ more than most English readers expect. A formal verb ending in a newspaper is clipped in speech, and the clipped form is what a phone call contains. An agent trained mostly on books handles the news bulletin well and a customer badly.
Kanglish adds a second layer: English words carry Kannada endings. 'Cancel maadbidi', 'payment aagide' and 'EMI kattbeku' are normal sentences in a Bengaluru office. The English stem tells the agent the topic, and the Kannada ending tells it whether the action is done, requested or promised. Both halves must be read.
Outpero's Kannada agent opens in Kannada and switches to English the moment the caller does, in the same voice. It uses a neutral spoken register, and Outpero makes no claim of dialect-specific training, so a pilot on callers from your own list is the way to see how it handles Mysuru, Hubballi or coastal speech.
Numbers, dates and names are where bookings go wrong
A Kannada agent that understands the conversation but records the wrong amount or the wrong day has still failed the business. These examples show why numbers, times and dates need their own tests.
Want to hear this working, not just read about it?
| What the caller says | What it means | Why it breaks an agent |
|---|---|---|
| 'ಮೂವತ್ತೈದು ಸಾವಿರ' | 35,000 | A compound number word: thirty-five joined to thousand. A model that hears 'ಮೂವತ್ತು' and 'ಸಾವಿರ' separately may record 30,000 |
| 'ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಗಂಟೆಗೆ' | At two-thirty | The '-ೂವರೆ' ending means and a half, so the time is two thirty, not two o'clock |
| 'ಮೂರೂ ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು' | Three forty-five | A quarter-based form with no digits in it; the agent has to turn words into 3:45 and read it back |
| 'ನಾಡಿದ್ದು ಬರ್ತೀನಿ' | I will come the day after tomorrow | A single word for a day that English needs four words for; a wrong guess moves a booking by a day |
| 'ಎರಡು ಲಕ್ಷ ಐವತ್ತು ಸಾವಿರ' | 2,50,000 (2.5 lakh) | Indian digit grouping, spoken in Kannada words. A mix such as '2 ಲಕ್ಷ fifty thousand' is also common on one call |
Names need similar care. Kannada names often carry initials for a father's name or a village, and callers differ in whether they say the initials. Place names have an older and a newer spelling in daily use, such as Mysore and Mysuru, so a list that holds one and a caller who says the other is a standing cause of wrong addresses. Ask every agent to read back the name, the number and the time before it ends the call.
The 10-call test
Run these from a mobile phone in a noisy place: a road, a market, a car with the window down. Keep notes in a sheet with one row per call. Score each as pass, partial or fail, then check the transcript and summary in the dashboard, since those show what the agent understood and not what it said.
| Call | What to do | What a pass looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Say 'ಹಲೋ' and nothing more. Time the reply with a stopwatch. | A reply within about 1.5 seconds, opening in Kannada with a courteous 'ನೀವು', not a casual 'ನೀನು' |
| 2 | Answer in Kannada, then switch to English in the middle of a sentence, then come back to Kannada. | The agent follows both switches without asking which language you prefer |
| 3 | Speak like an older relative: slow, formal, with a respectful ending. | The register stays polite, and nothing in the reply sounds like a newsreader |
| 4 | Give a budget in Kannada number words, such as 'ಮೂವತ್ತೈದು ಸಾವಿರ'. | The captured field says 35,000, and the read-back matches |
| 5 | Give a ten-digit mobile number in groups, mixing Kannada and English digits. | All ten digits are captured, in order |
| 6 | Ask for a visit 'ನಾಡಿದ್ದು ಎರಡೂವರೆಗೆ'. | The booking says the day after tomorrow at 2:30, not tomorrow at 2:00 |
| 7 | Cut in with 'ಒಂದು ನಿಮಿಷ' while the agent is talking. | It stops at once and waits; a failure is finishing the sentence over you |
| 8 | Ask something the agent was never briefed on. | It says it will check, or records your question for a follow-up, and does not invent an answer |
| 9 | Say 'ಸಂಜೆ ಐದು ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಕಾಲ್ ಮಾಡಿ' (call me at five in the evening). | The outcome is a callback at 17:00 in the summary; with Smart follow-ups switched on, the follow-up call is scheduled for that time |
| 10 | Say 'ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಕಾಲ್ ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ' (do not call me again). | The agent accepts politely and ends the call; once the opt-out is confirmed, the number is logged as do-not-call |
Eight or more passes on a noisy street is a vendor worth piloting on a small list. Six or seven means ask the vendor what it will fix, and re-test. Fewer than six is a demo that happens to speak Kannada.
IVR meaning in Kannada, and why a voice agent replaces the menu
IVR stands for Interactive Voice Response, the recorded phone menu that says things like 'ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿ, English ಗೆ ಎರಡನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿ' (press one for Kannada, press two for English). Most Kannada speakers use the English term IVR as it is, or describe it as a phone menu where you choose by pressing a number.
A menu works when callers have a few clear needs. It fails when someone has a question that is not on the list, speaks Kannada with English mixed in or is calling from a noisy road where a missed keypress sends them to the wrong department. The caller then presses zero or hangs up.
A voice agent replaces the menu with one open question: how can we help. The caller speaks instead of pressing keys, and the agent works from what was said. Outpero's agent listens to speech and does not ask callers to press keypad digits. Many businesses keep their phone system for routing departments and put the agent on the enquiries the menu handles worst. The comparison page on voice agents against IVR sets this out.
What the agent does after the call
- —Records and summarises. Recording, full transcript, summary, sentiment and the fields you define are stored in the dashboard and exportable as CSV.
- —Sends the result to your systems. A post-call webhook posts the call details to your endpoint; a lead-intake API and setup guides connect lead sources such as Meta lead ads, IndiaMART and JustDial.
- —Books a slot. With a Google account connected, the agent can book an appointment in Google Calendar during the call, inside the business hours you set.
- —Sends a WhatsApp message. An approved template message goes out from your own WhatsApp provider account (Meta Cloud API, Interakt or AiSensy) during or after the call. It is a text template, not a chat.
- —Remembers returning callers. When switched on, caller memory lets the agent open its next outbound call to the same person with what it knows, and the follow-up call can be rescheduled to a time the caller asked for.
Limits to know before testing
- —One opening language, English and at most one extra Indian language per agent. A Kannada agent is not a Tamil or Hindi agent.
- —Tulu and Konkani are not supported. Many coastal callers also speak Kannada, but only a pilot shows how far that goes.
- —Voicemail detection is tuned mainly for English greetings, so a Kannada voicemail greeting may not always be recognised. Check how your pilot logs those calls.
- —Caller memory is opt-in, kept per agent, and holds the last few call summaries and key facts, not a full transcript. It is used when the agent calls out.
- —Inbound answering is a mode that is still launching. Confirm availability on your account before building a plan around it.
Frequently asked questions
How does a Kannada AI calling agent work?
+
It connects a call, converts the caller's speech to text, uses a language model with your script and knowledge to decide the reply, speaks the answer in a Kannada voice and listens for interruptions. Afterwards it stores a recording, transcript, summary and the fields you defined. Outpero averages 0.8 to 1.3 seconds from the caller stopping to the agent speaking.
Can an AI calling agent understand Kanglish?
+
Outpero's Kannada agent opens in Kannada and switches to English mid-sentence in the same voice, which is how Kanglish sounds on real calls. It uses a neutral spoken register and does not claim dialect-specific training, so test it with sentences like a booking confirmation that mixes English nouns with Kannada endings, and read the transcript.
What is the IVR meaning in Kannada?
+
IVR is Interactive Voice Response, the recorded phone menu that asks callers to press a number for each option. Kannada speakers usually say IVR as it is, or call it a press-a-number phone menu. A voice agent replaces the menu with a spoken conversation, so the caller states the need instead of pressing keys.
How do I test a Kannada AI calling agent in ten calls?
+
Cover latency, a Kanglish switch, a polite register, a budget in number words, a phone number, a date word like ನಾಡಿದ್ದು, an interruption, an off-script question, a callback request and a do-not-call request. Place the calls from a noisy road and score the transcripts. The ten-call table in this guide lists each step with a pass condition.
Does the agent handle numbers and dates spoken in Kannada?
+
It is built to, but this is the step to test hardest. Compound number words such as ಮೂವತ್ತೈದು ಸಾವಿರ, clock words like ಎರಡೂವರೆ and day words like ನಾಡಿದ್ದು are common failure points for any vendor. Ask the agent to read the amount, time and day back before the call ends.
What can the agent do after the call?
+
After a call, Outpero can send an approved WhatsApp template message from your own provider account, post the call details to your webhook, and show the transcript and summary in the dashboard. WhatsApp is a text template send, not a chat, and callers cannot reply into a conversation the agent reads.
The Outpero team builds AI voice agents for Indian businesses, in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and English. Figures are from Outpero's own product unless another source is named.
