Is there a setup fee for an AI voice agent?
It depends on the vendor. Enterprise and managed-service AI voice vendors often charge a one-time setup or onboarding fee for script building and integrations, while self-serve platforms usually do not. Outpero has no setup fee, no monthly base fee and no contract: you sign up at app.outpero.com, receive 50 free credits, and pay only for connected minutes.
Why some vendors charge to set up
A setup fee usually pays for people. A managed vendor may write and test your script, build CRM integrations, tune the voice, translate prompts into several languages and run a pilot. For a bank, insurer or large NBFC with compliance reviews and a legacy CRM, that work is real and the fee can be worth paying.
Self-serve platforms skip the fee because you do that work yourself in the product. The trade-off is time, not money: someone on your side writes the script and connects the lead sources.
What setup looks like on Outpero
- 01Sign up at app.outpero.com and receive 50 free credits.
- 02Create an AI employee: choose the language, the voice tier and write what it should say and capture.
- 03Connect lead sources such as Meta lead ads, Google Ads lead forms or website forms, directly or through Zapier, Make or a webhook; or upload a CSV for a bulk campaign.
- 04Test calls on your own phone, then go live.
There is no fee at any of these steps. Spend starts when calls connect, at ₹5 or ₹6.8 per minute, plus ₹649/month for a dedicated number.
How to compare a quote that includes a setup fee
Spread the one-time fee over the minutes you expect to call in the first year, and add it to that vendor's per-minute rate. A fee that looks large can be minor for a company calling a lakh minutes a year and decisive for one calling a few thousand.
Also check what the fee buys. If it includes ongoing script changes and campaign management, compare it with the staff time you would otherwise spend; if it only covers account creation, it is simply a higher price.
One more thing to compare is how changes are handled after launch. Scripts get edited often in the first weeks, as you learn which objections come up. On a self-serve platform, editing the AI employee's instructions costs nothing; with a managed vendor, ask whether changes are included or billed as extra work.

Follow-up questions
When is paying a setup fee the better choice?
+
When you need a vendor to do the work for you: complex CRM integrations, regulated scripts that need legal sign-off, many languages at once, or no one internally with time to build and test the agent. In those cases the fee buys labour. If your team can write a script and connect a form, a self-serve platform avoids it.
