How do I stop my calls being marked as spam?
Calls get marked as spam when people don't recognise the caller or feel harassed, so the fixes are behavioural: call only people who enquired or opted in, use one consistent registered number, say who you are and why in the first sentence, space out retries, honour ‘don't call me’ at once, and screen lists against DND. Rotating numbers to escape a spam label usually makes the problem worse.
How spam labels happen
Caller ID apps popular in India label numbers partly from user reports and partly from calling patterns. A number that dials thousands of people who never asked to hear from it, or calls the same person repeatedly in a day, collects reports fast. Once labelled, pickup falls across every campaign on that number.
What reduces reports
| Practice | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Call people who enquired, quickly | They expect the call and recognise the reason |
| One consistent business number | People learn it and some save it |
| Name and reason in the first line | Nobody feels tricked into a sales pitch |
| Retries spaced hours or days apart | No feeling of being hounded |
| Stop immediately on ‘don't call’ | Removes the angriest reporters |
| DND screening on bulk lists | Respects people who opted out |
What not to do
- —Do not buy cold lists and blast them; that is the fastest route to a spam label and to regulatory trouble.
- —Do not rotate through fresh numbers; it looks like fraud to both people and carriers.
- —Do not hide the reason for the call behind a question like ‘is this a good time?’ with no context.
- —Do not keep calling numbers that said no in a previous campaign.
Compliance basics
Commercial calling in India falls under TRAI's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018, which cover DLT registration, the National Customer Preference Register (DND) and consent. Following them does not guarantee you will never be reported, but ignoring them guarantees problems.
If your number is already labelled
Fix the behaviour first: stop cold blasts, slow retries and tighten the opening line. Then give it time. Caller ID apps generally let a business request a review of its number, and a label is easier to shed when new reports stop arriving.
Calls go out on a DLT-registered calling line. A dedicated number costs ₹649 a month, including compliance and carrier fees, so your leads see the same number every time. Bulk campaigns include DND screening, calling windows and spaced retries.
