Telephony
What is Caller ID?
Caller ID is the telephone network feature that shows the person receiving a call the number, and sometimes the name, of the party calling them.
Also called: CLI, calling line identification, CNAP, calling name presentation
In India the number displayed is the calling line identity passed on by the originating operator, and for commercial calls it must be a number genuinely registered to the business; masked or spoofed numbers are not permitted. Name display has mostly come from third-party apps that crowd-source labels such as 'Spam' or 'Telemarketer', and TRAI has recommended a network-level Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service that would show the subscriber's registered name instead. Promotional calls from registered telemarketers are expected to come from the 140-series, which many recipients now recognise and ignore.
What the caller ID shows decides whether the phone is picked up at all, before a single word of the script is heard. A number that is stable, registered and free of spam labels keeps pickup rates up month after month; a number that keeps changing or attracts complaints gets flagged quickly. Outpero places calls from a dedicated, DLT-registered number, so the same identity appears on every call a business makes.
