Is my call data secure with an AI voice agent?

Short answer

Call data with an AI voice agent can be secure, but that depends on the vendor's practices rather than the technology itself. Recordings, transcripts and captured details are personal data, so check where they are stored, who can access them, how long they are kept and how they reach your systems. In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 makes the business accountable for that data.

What data a voice agent creates

Every AI call produces more data than a typical human call. There is the audio recording, a full text transcript, an AI-written summary, a sentiment label and the structured fields captured, such as name, budget, locality or policy number. That data passes through telephony, speech recognition, a language model and speech synthesis, then into a dashboard and often a CRM.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • —Is data encrypted in transit and at rest?
  • —Which third-party services process the audio and text, and do they retain it or use it for training?
  • —Who inside the vendor can listen to recordings, and is that access logged?
  • —How long are recordings and transcripts kept, and can you delete them on request?
  • —Can you restrict dashboard access by team member?
  • —How is data sent to your systems, and can the receiving endpoint be secured?

Your obligations as the business

Under the DPDP Act, 2023, the business that decides why personal data is collected is the data fiduciary, even when a vendor processes it. That means you need a lawful basis for calling, should tell people the call is recorded and should not collect more than the purpose needs. TRAI's commercial communication rules also govern whom you may call and when.

Practical steps include having the agent state at the start that the call is recorded, never collecting card numbers, OTPs or full Aadhaar numbers by voice, and limiting who in your team can export call data.

How Outpero handles call data

Outpero stores each call's recording, transcript, summary, sentiment and captured fields in your dashboard, and sends them to your webhook for every call, completed calls only or voicemail only, so data goes where you point it. Calls go out on a DLT-registered calling line. For anything your compliance team needs beyond that, such as retention periods or processing locations, ask for it in writing before you start, as you would with any vendor.

Follow-up questions

Should an AI voice agent collect payment or card details on a call?

+

Generally no. Card numbers, CVVs, OTPs and full Aadhaar numbers should not be spoken to any agent, human or AI, because they end up in recordings and transcripts. A safer pattern is for the agent to confirm intent on the call and send a secure payment link by message, so sensitive details never pass through the voice channel.
