How do I check whether an AI voice agent really supports my language?

Short answer

Test it. Call the agent in your language, with local names, numbers, place names and the mixed English your customers use, and listen to the recording afterwards. A language on a vendor's list can mean anything from a greeting to full conversation. Ask for unedited calls and check the transcript for errors.

Why a language list is not proof

A vendor may list a language because the voice can read text in it, even if the system struggles to understand a caller. Listing is marketing; conversation is the test.

A five-part language test

  1. 01Speak naturally, the way a customer would, not like a script.
  2. 02Include code-switching: Hindi with English words, Telugu with English, and so on.
  3. 03Use names, localities, product names and amounts common in your business.
  4. 04Give numbers, dates and times in the local style and see if they are understood.
  5. 05Try different speakers, including older people and people with strong regional accents.

What to examine

CheckPass looks like
UnderstandingThe transcript matches what was said
VoiceNatural pronunciation, not an English accent on local words
SwitchingThe agent follows when the caller moves to English
Numbers and namesRead back correctly
TonePolite register suited to the audience

Be careful with dialect claims

Claims of per-dialect training are hard to verify. Ask to hear a call from your region and judge for yourself. A system that handles a standard form of a language well can still struggle with strong local variants, so test with speakers from your actual customer base.

Ask who checks quality in the language

  • —Does the vendor have native speakers reviewing outputs?
  • —Can you edit pronunciation of names and terms?
  • —Is the price the same across languages?
  • —What is the plan when a language is not supported?

What Outpero supports

Outpero's live languages are Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and Indian English. In each, the agent switches to English the moment the caller does, mid-sentence and in the same voice, covering Hinglish, Tenglish, Tanglish, Kanglish, Manglish and Marathi-English. The per-minute price is the same in every language.

Languages outside those seven, such as Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, Urdu, Assamese and Konkani, are not live, and Outpero does not claim per-dialect training. Outpero publishes this page, so test its calls as you would any other.

Follow-up questions

Does the price change by language?

+

At Outpero it does not; the per-minute price is the same in every supported language. Other vendors may charge differently, so ask. Also check that voice quality tiers, not only language, are priced clearly, since a premium voice can change the cost per minute.

Enterprise and custom: volume plans go as low as ₹3.5/min, quoted on your needs.
