Does AI calling work in Assamese and other North East languages?
Not with Outpero. Assamese, Meitei (Manipuri), Khasi, Mizo, Nepali, Bodo and the other languages of the North East are not supported. Of Outpero's seven live languages, Hindi and English are the useful ones there, and both are widely used for business in Guwahati, Shillong and Imphal. For callers who need their own language, use human callers.
A region of many languages
The North East is one of India's most linguistically diverse regions. Assamese, with about 15 million first-language speakers in Census 2011, is the largest language. Bengali is widely spoken in Barak Valley and Tripura, Meitei in Manipur, Khasi and Garo in Meghalaya, Mizo in Mizoram, Nepali in Sikkim, and dozens of other languages across Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
That diversity is exactly why English and Hindi act as link languages for business. English is the official language of Nagaland and is widely used in Meghalaya and Mizoram.
What works with Outpero today
- —English for students, professionals and B2B buyers across Shillong, Kohima, Aizawl and Guwahati.
- —Hindi for traders, many Guwahati residents, and callers in Arunachal Pradesh, where Hindi is a common link language.
- —Human callers for Assamese-first customers in upper Assam towns such as Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Tezpur, and for rural callers generally.
Typical North East calling use cases
Coaching and college admissions in Guwahati, hospital appointment reminders, suppliers to the tea sector, tourism operators taking Sikkim and Meghalaya bookings, and microfinance repayment reminders are all phone-heavy. For English- and Hindi-comfortable segments, an AI agent can call new enquiries within 30 seconds and run reminder campaigns with retries and calling windows.
What to avoid
Do not run a Hindi agent on a whole Assamese-first list and hope for the best. Calls will be short, callers may feel disrespected, and the transcripts will show it. Split lists by language preference, and keep humans on segments the agent cannot serve.
One-way messages are different. Outpero's voice broadcast plays one fixed message to a list and ends the call, with no conversation. Upload audio recorded in Assamese and callers hear Assamese, which works for exam-date alerts, repayment reminders or offers. Synthesised broadcast voices only cover the seven live languages.
Outpero is clear about this: none of the North East's regional languages are supported, and the agent should not be presented as speaking them. Use it for the Hindi and English share of your list, from ₹5 per minute with no setup fee.
