Can AI sell insurance policies over the phone in India?
Not on its own. In India, insurance is sold and advised by IRDAI-licensed agents, POSPs, brokers and insurers' own staff, so an AI voice agent should not recommend or close a policy. What it does well is the first call: reaching a lead within 30 seconds, capturing age, family, existing cover and budget, and booking a call with a licensed advisor.
Split the sale into two jobs
An insurance sales call has a qualification part and an advice part. Qualification is factual: who needs cover, what they already have, what they can spend, when they are free to talk. Advice is regulated: which plan, what sum insured, which riders, and why. Automating the first and keeping humans on the second is both compliant and efficient.
What the AI agent captures
- —Type of cover wanted: health, term life, motor, or a savings plan.
- —Who it is for: self, spouse, parents, or a family floater.
- —Ages and city, which drive premiums.
- —Existing cover through an employer or an older policy.
- —Budget range and the best time for an advisor to call.
Disclosure and mis-selling
IRDAI treats mis-selling seriously, and phone selling is where overstated benefits most easily creep in. An AI agent briefed to stay factual, to avoid phrases like guaranteed returns, and to log every product question for a licensed advisor's callback reduces that risk. Every call is recorded and transcribed, giving the compliance team a full record.
The agent should also say clearly who it is calling for. A broker or POSP calling about an insurer's product should name the intermediary, so the customer knows who they are dealing with.
Where speed pays
Health and term insurance leads from Meta and Google ads are often comparison shoppers. Calling within 30 seconds catches them before they talk to someone else. The agent then books a slot in your advisor's calendar and sends a WhatsApp confirmation with the advisor's name.
How Outpero fits
Outpero's agent handles the instant callback and the follow-up campaign for leads who did not book. Pricing is per connected minute from ₹5, with no setup fee and no monthly base fee, so a small POSP network can use it as easily as a large broker.

Follow-up questions
Can the AI agent quote a premium?
+
Only if you give it an exact figure that applies, such as the renewal premium on an existing policy. For a new policy, premiums depend on age, health, cover and add-ons, and quoting an estimate without underwriting invites misunderstanding. Brief the agent to capture details and leave quotes to a licensed advisor who can explain them properly.
