What is VoIP?

VoIP, or voice over internet protocol, is technology that carries voice calls as data packets over the internet or a private IP network instead of over traditional circuit-switched phone lines.

Also called: voice over IP, internet telephony, IP telephony

A VoIP system converts speech into digital packets, sends them across the network and rebuilds the audio at the other end. Because the call is just data, it can be started from software, a browser or a cloud server with no physical phone line. To reach an ordinary mobile or landline, the VoIP provider connects to the public telephone network, usually through a SIP trunk. Call quality depends on packet loss, delay and jitter, which is why the path between the provider and the carrier matters as much as the software.

Why it matters

VoIP is what makes AI calling economically possible: an agent running in the cloud can place many calls without a rack of physical lines. The catch is that delay on the network adds directly to the pause the caller hears, so it counts towards conversational latency. Outpero sells concurrency as channels on a +91 number at ₹649 per month each, which is how many VoIP-based calls can run at once, and each connected minute is billed from prepaid credits.
