AI Voice Agent vs Predictive Dialer
A predictive dialer keeps a large team of human agents busy by dialling several numbers per agent, while an AI voice agent holds the conversations itself, so the dialer wins where you already have a big trained team and the agent wins where people are the bottleneck.

Side by side
| Outpero AI employee | a predictive dialer | |
|---|---|---|
| Who talks to the person | The AI agent, in the caller's own language | A human agent, once the call is connected |
| How calls are placed | Dials from your list or on a trigger; each channel runs one call at a time | Dials several numbers per agent and predicts which will be answered |
| Risk of silent or abandoned calls | None; an agent is ready on every connected call | Real, when more calls connect than agents are free |
| Agents needed | None for the calls the AI handles | Enough agents to absorb the pickups, usually a large pool |
| Speed on a bulk list | Each channel works through roughly 55 dials an hour; 1,000 dials on 3 channels take about 6 hours | Faster per human agent, limited by team size |
| Cost structure | From ₹5/min connected talk time, no setup fee | Per-seat licence and minutes, plus every agent's ₹15,000–₹25,000 monthly salary |
| Quality of the conversation | Consistent script; handles routine calls well | Varies by agent; excels at complex ones |
| Triggering calls from a new lead | Calls within 30 seconds of an enquiry arriving | Works through a queued list; real-time triggers depend on the vendor |
| Scaling for a campaign | Add channels at ₹649/month each, remove next month | Hire and train agents |
| Notes after the call | Recording, transcript, summary, sentiment and custom fields | Disposition and notes typed by the agent |
What the comparison misses
A predictive dialer dials more numbers than it has free agents, using a pickup-rate model to guess when each agent will finish. When the guess is right, agents barely wait between calls. When it is wrong, two people answer and only one agent is free, and the second person is dropped or hears silence.
That trade-off is acceptable for a large call centre that can tune the dialer and has a deep pool of agents. It is a poor fit for a ten-person team, where one wrong guess produces abandoned calls the team cannot absorb. Indian recipients who hear silence tend to treat the number as spam from then on.
An AI voice agent does not have the problem. It speaks the moment a call connects, so a connected call is never dropped, and concurrency comes from channels rather than from guessing. On a bulk list, each channel works through roughly 55 dials an hour, so three channels handle 1,000 dials in about six hours.
The two are not enemies. Plenty of teams run an AI agent for lead qualification and reminders, and a predictive dialer for the human closers who take the warm leads. The decision is where the hours of skilled people should go.
When a predictive dialer is the better choice
A predictive dialer is the better tool for a large outbound team, roughly fifteen or more agents, working a big list where each conversation needs a human: loan and insurance sales, subscription renewals, fundraising or collections with negotiation. It maximises each agent's talk time. If your agents are few, your list is small, or your calls are scripted and repetitive, the dialer's complexity and its risk of dropped calls are not worth it.
