What is an automated call, and is it the same as an AI call?
An automated call is a phone call placed or answered by software rather than a person, usually playing a recorded message or following a fixed menu. An AI call is one kind of automated call, but it is different: the AI holds a two-way conversation, understands what the person says and adapts. Recorded-message calls and IVR menus are automated without being AI conversations.
The main kinds of automated call
| Type | What happens | Can the person talk back? |
|---|---|---|
| Recorded message call (voice broadcast) | One fixed message plays to everyone on a list, then the call ends | No |
| IVR menu | The caller hears options and presses keys or says set words | Only within the menu |
| Auto dialer with human agents | Software dials and connects a person when someone answers | Yes, to a human |
| Robocall | Mass recorded calls, often unsolicited | No |
| AI voice agent | Software speaks and listens in free conversation | Yes, to the AI |
So the word automated describes who dials or answers, not how intelligent the call is. An AI call is the most capable end of the range.
Why the difference matters
A recorded call cannot hear that the customer has moved house, wants a callback tomorrow or has a question about fees. An AI voice agent can respond, record the answer and act on it, for example by booking a slot, sending a WhatsApp message or transferring the call to your team.
Regulation, meanwhile, looks at the purpose of the call more than the technology. A promotional automated call is treated as commercial communication under TRAI's TCCCP Regulations 2018 whether it plays a recording or speaks with AI, so DLT registration, the right number series and DND screening still apply.
Outpero offers both kinds
Outpero's AI conversation modes are instant lead calling, bulk campaigns and inbound answering, billed at ₹5 or ₹6.8 per connected minute. Voice broadcast is the other kind: it plays one message, either an uploaded audio file or text spoken in Outpero's voices, to everyone on a list. It is not a conversation, and it is billed at a lower rate than AI minutes.
Use broadcast for announcements, offers and alerts where nobody needs to reply. Use an AI conversation when you need answers, interest levels or bookings back.

Follow-up questions
Is an automated call the same as a robocall?
+
Not quite. A robocall is an automated call that plays a recorded message, typically in bulk and often without the recipient's permission. An automated call can also be a consented appointment reminder or an AI conversation. The difference is largely consent, registration and purpose, not the technology.
