Outpero

Does AI calling work in Bengali?

Short answer

Not with Outpero today. Bengali is not supported: Outpero's agents speak Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam and English. Some other platforms list Bengali, so test any vendor on real Kolkata calls before committing. If your callers in West Bengal are comfortable in Hindi or English, an Outpero agent in either can work; for Bengali-only callers it is not the right fit.

The honest status

Bengali is the second most spoken language in India, with about 97 million first-language speakers in Census 2011, mostly in West Bengal, Tripura and parts of Assam. It is a large gap in Outpero's coverage, and it is better to say so plainly than to sell a Hindi agent as a Bengali one.

What works for West Bengal businesses today

  • —Hindi. Kolkata, Howrah, Asansol and Durgapur have large Hindi-speaking populations, and many Bengali speakers are comfortable taking a business call in Hindi.
  • —English. Professionals, students and parents calling about higher education or IT jobs often prefer English.
  • —Split lists. If your CSV mixes Bengali-only and Hindi-comfortable contacts, run the Outpero campaign on the second group and keep human callers on the first.

What does not work is an AI agent speaking Hindi to a caller who wants Bengali. Expect short calls and weak outcomes, and read transcripts closely in the first week if you try it.

One-way messages in Bengali are possible

Outpero's voice broadcast mode is not an AI conversation: one fixed message is played to everyone on a list and the call ends. Because you can upload your own audio file, that message can be recorded in Bengali by a person on your team. It suits payment reminders, offers and appointment alerts. Broadcast text synthesised in Outpero's own voices is limited to the seven live languages.

Why Bengali voice AI is hard

Bengali has its own script, a sound system that Hindi models do not cover well, and a clear gap between formal and colloquial speech. Kolkata speech and the Bengali of Bangladesh also differ. A credible Bengali agent needs speech recognition and voices built for the language, not a Hindi model stretched across it.

How to evaluate any Bengali AI calling vendor

  1. 01Ask for a live test call in Bengali to your own phone, not a recorded demo.
  2. 02Speak naturally, mix in English words, and interrupt the agent mid-sentence.
  3. 03Say a price and a date in Bengali and check that the transcript captures them correctly.
  4. 04Ask what happens when a caller switches to Hindi or English.

If Bengali is essential for most of your callers, choose a vendor that passes those tests. If Hindi and English cover most of your list, Outpero's agents are live today from ₹5 per minute, with no setup fee and no lock-in.

Follow-up questions

Is Hindi a reasonable substitute for Bengali on sales calls?

+

Sometimes. It works for callers who already use Hindi at work, which is common among traders, migrants and many younger professionals in Kolkata. It works poorly for older or rural callers who expect Bengali, and on sensitive calls such as healthcare or collections. Test on a slice of your list before moving a whole campaign to Hindi.
