What is Prosody?

Prosody is the rhythm, stress, pitch and intonation of speech, the features that carry meaning beyond the words themselves.

Also called: intonation, speech rhythm

The same words can be a question, a statement or an expression of doubt depending on prosody alone. Indian languages each have their own patterns, and Indian English has a distinct rhythm that differs from British or American English. Synthetic voices that carry English intonation into Hindi or Tamil sound foreign even when every word is pronounced correctly. Prosody also governs how numbers are grouped when read aloud, such as a ten-digit mobile number or an amount in lakh.

Why it matters

Callers judge how natural a voice sounds largely by its prosody, not its pronunciation. Flat or misplaced stress is what makes an agent sound robotic, and a question delivered with falling intonation means the caller may not realise they are being asked something, which stalls the conversation and lengthens the call.
