Voice AI
What is Noise suppression?
Noise suppression is the signal-processing step that reduces background sound such as traffic, crowds, fans or a television so that the speaker's voice is clearer to whoever, or whatever, is listening.
Also called: background noise removal, noise cancellation, audio denoising
On a phone call the audio is captured by whatever microphone the caller happens to hold, often a mobile handset in a market, a bus, a shop floor or a house with a television running. Noise suppression filters the steady and sudden background sounds out before the audio reaches the speech recogniser, which is the part of a voice AI system that turns sound into text. It cannot recover words that were completely drowned out, and aggressive filtering can clip the start of a sentence, so it is a trade-off rather than a switch.
Indian callers rarely phone from a quiet room, so background noise is the normal condition, not the exception. Poorly handled noise produces misheard names, numbers and dates, and the agent then asks the caller to repeat, which feels slow and robotic. When evaluating any voice AI vendor, test it with a pilot call made from a noisy place, because a demo recorded in a quiet office tells you very little about how the agent will hear a real lead on a street in Hyderabad or Pune.
