Tamil AI Calling Agent: How It Works and What to Test
A Tamil AI calling agent is software that makes or answers phone calls and talks in spoken Tamil: it listens to the caller, decides what to say using your script and facts, replies in a synthetic voice, and writes up the call afterwards. Outpero's agents answer in an average of 0.8 to 1.3 seconds from the moment the caller stops speaking. How well one works depends less on the technology than on whether it handles how Tamil is actually spoken on the phone, which is what the ten-call test below checks.
What a Tamil AI calling agent is, and what it is not
A Tamil AI calling agent holds a two-way conversation on a normal phone call. The person on the other end does not need an app, a link or a keypad: they pick up and talk. The same product may be called an AI voice agent, an AI calling agent, a voice bot, or, in Outpero's own wording, an AI employee.
It is not a text-to-speech tool that reads a written script aloud, because that never listens. It is not a menu that asks the caller to press 1 for Tamil, because that does not understand speech. And it is not a WhatsApp chatbot, because it works on voice calls. What separates it from all three is that it listens, understands, answers and records, all within one conversation.
The call pipeline in plain words
Every turn in a call passes through the same chain. Understanding the chain explains both why a good agent feels natural and where a bad one breaks.
- 01The line. The call runs over a phone number. For outbound, a +91 business number dials the contact. Indian calling lines are DLT-registered, and bulk campaigns screen against the DND list.
- 02Listening. The caller's speech is turned into text. This step decides whether 'aanju mani' is heard as 5 o'clock or 'ten ponnu' is heard as ten rupees, and it is where noise, accent and mixed language do most harm.
- 03Understanding and deciding. The text goes to the model that holds your script, your business facts and the rules you set. It decides the next sentence, whether to book a slot, whether to send a WhatsApp template, or whether the caller asked not to be called again.
- 04Speaking. The chosen sentence becomes audio in a Tamil voice. Short sentences matter here, because a long reply makes the caller wait and invites interruption.
- 05After the call. The call is recorded and stored with a transcript, a summary, sentiment and the fields you asked it to capture, such as budget, class or preferred time. This can also be sent to your own systems.
The time from the caller finishing to the agent starting is the sum of steps two to four. Outpero's average is 0.8 to 1.3 seconds end to end. A gap near one second feels like a person thinking, and a gap over two seconds feels like a dropped line. Average is the honest word, because a long caller sentence or a poor mobile signal stretches any single turn.
Where Tamil makes the pipeline work harder
Phone Tamil is not written Tamil
Written Tamil and spoken Tamil are noticeably different. A caller says 'நாளைக்கு வர்றேன்', not the formal written form, and drops or merges endings: 'பண்ணிடுங்க' for 'please do it', 'ஆகிடுச்சு' for 'it has happened'. An agent trained mainly on newspaper-style text mishears these, and one that answers in newspaper-style sounds like an announcement. The reply should sound like a polite neighbour, not a news reader.
Tanglish follows a pattern
Tanglish is not random English sprinkled in. English nouns and verbs take Tamil endings and helper verbs: 'confirm pannidunga', 'cancel aayiduchu', 'budget fix pannitom', 'loan approve aagum-aa'. The agent must treat the whole phrase as one meaning and answer in kind. It also has to follow the switch the other way, because a caller who answers a Tamil question in full English expects English back. Outpero's agents follow the caller between Tamil and English mid-sentence, in the same voice.
Numbers, money and time have their own words
Spoken Tamil numbers differ from the written forms: 'ஒண்ணு, ரெண்டு, மூணு, நாலு, அஞ்சு' for one to five. Money uses fractions as words: 'ஒண்ணரை லட்சம்' is one and a half lakh and 'ரெண்டரை லட்சம்' is two and a half lakh. Time works the same way: 'மூணே கால்' is 3:15, 'நாலே முக்கால்' is 4:45 and 'பத்தரை' is half past ten. A recorded wrong digit or a wrong quarter-hour is an error that damages the lead, so ask the agent to read everything back.
Want to hear this working, not just read about it?
Dates also have a distinct word for the day after tomorrow, 'நாளன்னைக்கு', separate from tomorrow, 'நாளைக்கு', and yesterday, 'நேத்து'. Tamil callers rarely confuse these, so an agent should not either.
Names and initials
Tamil names often carry initials for the father's name or the native place, written before or after the given name, as in 'S. Karthik' or 'Karthik S'. A caller may give the initial first or last, or spell it as a letter name. The log should keep the full name as spoken and not drop the initial, since staff matching the record to a school form or a loan file need it.
Acknowledgements are not interruptions
Tamil callers sprinkle small sounds while the other person speaks: 'ம்ம்', 'ஆமா', 'சரி', 'சரிங்க'. A badly tuned agent stops mid-sentence at each one, as if it were a new question. A good one separates a back-channel nod from a real cut-in such as 'ஒரு நிமிஷம், அது இல்ல', then stops at once and listens.
The ten-call test to run before anything else
Run these on any vendor, from a mobile phone in a noisy place. Outpero's 50 free credits cover about ten minutes of Standard calling, enough to try most of these. Read the transcript after each call, because what the agent understood matters more than what it said.
| Call | What to do | Line to say | Passes when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Time the response gap | Any short greeting, then stop speaking | The agent replies in about one second, not three |
| 2 | Speak Tanglish | 'Class 6 admission pannanum, fees structure enna' | The reply continues naturally and does not restart in one language |
| 3 | Answer in English only | Reply to a Tamil question in full English | The agent follows into English without asking you to choose |
| 4 | Say a phone number the Tamil way | Nine, eight, ஏழு, ரெண்டு and so on in spoken Tamil | The number read back matches digit for digit |
| 5 | Say an amount with fractions | 'ஒண்ணரை லட்சம் budget' | The log shows 1,50,000 |
| 6 | Give a time with a quarter | 'நாலே முக்கால்-க்கு வர்றேன்' | The booking says 4:45 |
| 7 | Give a name with initials | 'என் பேரு S. கார்த்திக்' | The initial and name are both in the record |
| 8 | Use nods, then a real interruption | 'ம்ம், சரி' during the reply, then 'ஒரு நிமிஷம்' | It carries on after the nods and stops at the interruption |
| 9 | Ask something not in the script | 'Sunday open-aa irukkum, parking irukka' | It says it will check or take a message, and does not invent an answer |
| 10 | Refuse politely | 'இப்போ வேண்டாம், நாளைக்கு கூப்பிடுங்க' | A callback is noted for tomorrow, and no sales pressure follows |
Seven or more passes means the agent is worth a pilot. Fewer than five is a demo that happens to speak Tamil. Do not decide on call 1 alone: speed is easy to improve, and it says little about whether the Tamil holds.
What the agent does around the conversation
The conversation is only part of the work. Around it, an agent can book a real slot in a connected Google Calendar, send an approved WhatsApp template during or right after the call, and call your own API when the script asks for it. See the guides to Google Calendar booking, WhatsApp messages during and after calls, and custom API actions.
After each call the dashboard holds the recording, transcript, summary and the fields you chose to capture. The same data can go to a webhook, which is how a call result reaches a CRM or sheet. The guides to call data capture and summaries, post-call webhooks and lead intake and integrations explain the options. Agents can also remember returning callers when they call out, if that setting is switched on, and a knowledge base lets the owner teach fees, timings and policies.
Limits to know before a launch
- —Tamil sits among seven languages. An agent opens in one language, speaks English and can follow at most one extra Indian language.
- —The agent uses a neutral spoken register. A pilot with callers from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli is the proper test of regional speech.
- —Reading the call-to-lead speed: a new lead can be called in under 30 seconds, depending on how fast the lead source delivers it.
- —WhatsApp messages are templates approved with your own provider account. They are text messages with variables, and not images, documents or location pins.
- —Voice broadcast plays one fixed message and is not a conversation.
- —Calling rules, consent and DND duties are the business's responsibility. This is general information, not legal advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Tamil AI calling agent?
+
It is software that makes or answers phone calls and talks in spoken Tamil. It listens to the caller, decides the reply from your script and facts, speaks in a synthetic voice, and records a transcript, summary and captured details. Outpero also calls it an AI employee.
How does a Tamil AI voice agent understand Tanglish?
+
It treats a phrase like 'confirm pannidunga' as one meaning, with an English verb and a Tamil ending, and follows the caller between Tamil and English mid-sentence in the same voice. Test it with a sentence such as 'Class 6 admission pannanum, fees structure enna' and read the transcript.
How fast should a Tamil AI calling agent answer?
+
Around one second from the moment the caller stops speaking feels like a conversation. Outpero averages 0.8 to 1.3 seconds end to end. Over two seconds makes callers think the line dropped, so time the gap with a stopwatch on every vendor you test.
Can it read Tamil phone numbers and amounts correctly?
+
It should, but this is where agents fail, so test it. Say a number in spoken Tamil, an amount like 'ஒண்ணரை லட்சம்' and a time like 'நாலே முக்கால்', and ask the agent to read them back. The record should show 1,50,000 and 4:45.
Does the agent stop when a Tamil caller interrupts?
+
It should stop for a real interruption but not for small sounds such as 'ம்ம்' or 'சரி', which Tamil callers use constantly while listening. Test both: nod during a long reply, then interrupt with a full sentence. A good agent carries on after the nods and stops for the sentence.
How many test calls are enough before a launch?
+
Ten scripted calls on your own phone show whether the basics work, and a batch of 20 to 30 real leads from different parts of Tamil Nadu shows whether regional speech holds up. Read every transcript in the first batch before scaling the list.
