Malayalam AI Voice Agent vs Human Telecaller: Cost in Kerala (2026)

A Malayalam AI voice agent costs ₹5 per connected minute on Standard voices (₹6.8 on Premium) plus ₹649 a month for the number, against about ₹18,000 a month for one Malayalam-speaking telecaller on one shift. The AI agent is far cheaper when call volume is modest or when calls must be covered in the evening, on Sundays and during Onam week. For a telecaller who talks on the phone for most of the day, the gap narrows sharply, and the worked numbers below show exactly where.

Every rupee figure below is illustrative arithmetic built on stated assumptions, not a quote, a benchmark or a promise of savings. Outpero publishes this post and sells an AI voice agent, so run the same sums with your own call volumes, your own wage bill and your own pilot data before deciding.

The short answer for a Kerala business

Outpero charges for connected talk time only: ₹5 a minute on Standard voices and ₹6.8 on Premium, with no setup fee and no monthly subscription. A dedicated +91 number is ₹649 a month and includes one channel, which means one call at a time. All prices exclude 18% GST.

A Malayalam-speaking telecaller is paid per month whether the phone connects for ten minutes or five hours. That single difference drives the whole comparison: the AI agent bills by the minute actually spoken, and the telecaller bills by the calendar. Below about 3,000 connected minutes a month the AI agent usually costs much less than one salary. Beyond that, a fully utilised telecaller can match or beat the per-minute price, and the case for the AI agent rests on hours covered and speed instead.

What a Malayalam-speaking telecaller really costs

The reference figure used here is ₹18,000 a month for one telecaller. It is a salary line only. It leaves out recruitment, training, supervision, a seat, a headset and a phone line, and it leaves out the weeks when a new hire is still learning your script.

Attrition and the Malayalam-speaking hiring pool

Telecalling is a high-turnover role everywhere, and Kerala adds its own twist. Many young graduates leave for Bengaluru, Chennai or the Gulf, so a Kochi or Thrissur team that needs fluent Malayalam, comfortable Manglish and a pleasant phone voice has a smaller pool to hire from than a Hindi team in a metro. Offices outside Kerala find fluent Malayalam speakers harder still.

As an assumption, put recruitment at ₹10,000 per replacement hire and two to three weeks of reduced output while the new person learns. If one telecaller in a team of three leaves during a year, that is a cost the salary line never shows.

Shifts: one salary buys one shift, not the day

Kerala enquiries cluster in the evening and at weekends, because many callers are parents or relatives of people working abroad and they ring when the family is home. Suppose the business wants calls covered from 7 am to 10 pm, seven days a week. That is 15 hours a day and 105 hours a week.

A telecaller working six days of eight hours gives 48 hours a week. 105 divided by 48 is about 2.2 people, and leave and sickness push it to three. Three telecallers at ₹18,000 is ₹54,000 a month before any of the extras above. An AI voice agent covers the same hours with the same ₹5 per connected minute.

Onam, Vishu and the festival gap

Leave peaks around Onam and Vishu, and enquiries for gold, textiles, cars and weddings peak at the same time. A team that is stretched in a normal week is thinner exactly when volume rises. Extra channels are added or removed month by month at ₹649 each, so a festival fortnight can run more calls at once without hiring anyone.

Worked arithmetic: a month of Malayalam calls, three volumes

Assumptions: every connected call lasts 2 minutes, calls are billed only when connected, the number costs ₹649 a month, and GST at 18% is added to the total. Scenario C uses two channels, so the number line is ₹1,298. The last column shows how much of one telecaller's month the volume would fill if that telecaller spent 2 hours a day on connected calls, which is 3,120 minutes over 26 working days.

Want to hear this working, not just read about it?

Scenario A is a small clinic, coaching centre or showroom. The AI agent costs ₹7,846 with GST against ₹18,000 for a telecaller who would be busy for barely a third of the month. Scenario B is where the line is crossed: ₹18,466 with GST is about the same as one salary, so the argument for the AI agent there is coverage and speed, not price. Scenario C needs two telecallers at ₹36,000 for the same volume, which lands close to ₹36,932 with GST.

The sensitivity that decides everything: connected hours per day

A telecaller's real output is not 8 hours of talk. Dialling, unanswered numbers, wrong numbers, notes and breaks take much of the shift, and a cold list can connect for under two hours a day. The table turns ₹18,000 into a cost per connected minute for different levels of utilisation, over 26 working days a month.

Connected talk per dayMinutes per monthTelecaller cost per connected minuteAI agent per connected minute, Standard
1.5 hours2,340₹7.69₹5.00, or ₹5.90 with GST
2 hours3,120₹5.77₹5.00, or ₹5.90 with GST
3 hours4,680₹3.85₹5.00, or ₹5.90 with GST
4 hours6,240₹2.88₹5.00, or ₹5.90 with GST

Read it plainly. A telecaller on a warm list who connects for 3 to 4 hours a day is cheaper per connected minute than the AI agent, before recruitment and supervision are added. A telecaller on a cold or mixed list, connecting for 1.5 to 2 hours, costs about the same as the AI agent or more. Break-even against one ₹18,000 salary, counting GST at 18% with no input credit and the ₹649 number, is about 2,900 connected minutes on Standard and about 2,150 on Premium. A GST-registered business may be able to claim the GST back as input credit, which a chartered accountant can confirm.

Where the AI agent wins on more than price

  • —Speed to the first call: instant lead calling dials a new Meta or website enquiry within about 30 seconds of it arriving, a figure that depends on how quickly your lead source delivers the lead. A telecaller on another call, or off shift, cannot match that.
  • —Hours covered: the same agent works at 9 pm on a Sunday and on Thiruvonam day, and it does not take a long weekend.
  • —Unanswered numbers cost nothing: calls that never connect are not billed, so a list with a low pick-up rate does not inflate the bill the way it inflates salary per conversation.
  • —A record of every call: transcript, summary and the fields you asked for are written for every call, so the follow-up does not depend on someone remembering to type notes.
  • —Language consistency: the agent opens in Malayalam, follows the caller into English mid-sentence (Manglish) and keeps the same script every time. One agent speaks one opening language, English and at most one extra Indian language.

When a human telecaller is still better

The cheaper option is not always the right one. These are the situations where a person should stay on the phone, or take over from the AI agent after it has done the first pass.

  • —High-value negotiation: a villa in Kochi, a study-abroad package or a corporate gold-loan account is decided on trust, and a senior person closes it.
  • —Distressed or angry callers: a complaint about a hospital bill or a delayed refund needs real empathy, and no script replaces it.
  • —Relationship calls to elders: long-standing customers who expect to hear a familiar voice from the shop or branch.
  • —A heavily utilised team on a warm list: if your telecallers already connect 3 to 4 hours a day, the per-minute saving is small or negative.
  • —Callers who have moved fully into a dialect or into Tulu, which is not one of the seven languages, and callers abroad on foreign numbers, because the dialler reaches Indian numbers only.
  • —Anything legal, medical or financial that needs judgement beyond the script you loaded.

A split that usually works in Kerala

Most Kerala teams do better with a split than with a replacement. The AI agent takes the first call on every new enquiry, the reminder campaigns, the renewal and EMI follow-ups, and the evening and Sunday volume. The human team takes the qualified leads the agent flags, the negotiations and the sensitive calls.

That keeps a smaller group of better-paid Malayalam speakers on conversations where judgement matters. It also answers a common worry about the old malayalam voice process model of large pooled call-centre teams: the repetitive volume moves to software, and the people remaining do the work that needs a person.

How to run the sum with your own numbers

  1. 01Count connected conversations, not dials. Take last month's call log and note how many calls were actually answered and how long they ran.
  2. 02Multiply connected minutes by ₹5, or ₹6.8 for Premium voices, then add ₹649 per channel for the number.
  3. 03Add 18% GST to get the cash cost, then check with your chartered accountant whether input credit applies.
  4. 04Take one telecaller's all-in monthly cost, including recruitment, training, supervision and equipment, and divide by their real connected minutes.
  5. 05List the hours your business needs covered and count the people it takes to cover them, including leave around Onam and Vishu.
  6. 06Run a pilot with the 50 free credits on a few dozen of your own callers and read the transcripts before extending to a full list.

The verdict

For a Kerala business with modest or uneven call volume, evening and weekend demand, or a flood of leads that need a call inside a minute, a Malayalam AI voice agent is the lower-cost and faster option. For a team already connecting for most of the day on warm lists, the money is close and the choice turns on hours, consistency and record-keeping. The sensible next step is a small pilot on the free credits, with the call transcripts as evidence.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Malayalam AI voice agent cost in Kerala?

+

Outpero charges ₹5 per connected minute on Standard voices and ₹6.8 on Premium, with no setup fee and no monthly subscription. A dedicated +91 number is ₹649 a month including one channel, meaning one call at a time. Prices exclude 18% GST. The per-minute rate is the same in every language, and new accounts start with 50 free credits and no card.

Is a Malayalam AI voice agent cheaper than a human telecaller?

+

Often, but not always. Against a ₹18,000 telecaller on one shift, the AI agent is much cheaper below roughly 2,900 connected minutes a month on Standard voices with GST counted. A telecaller who connects for 3 to 4 hours a day on a warm list can cost less per connected minute, so the AI agent's stronger case is evening, Sunday and festival coverage and speed to the first call.

What does a Malayalam-speaking telecaller cost per month?

+

The reference figure used here is ₹18,000 a month for one telecaller on one shift. That excludes recruitment, training, supervision, a seat and a phone line, and it excludes the weeks a new hire needs to learn the script. Covering 7 am to 10 pm on all seven days needs about three people, or roughly ₹54,000 a month before those extras.

Do unanswered calls cost anything with an AI calling agent?

+

No. Outpero bills connected talk time only, so a number that rings out, is busy or goes to voicemail is not charged. A telecaller is paid for that dialling time anyway. This matters most on cold lists with low pick-up, where a human can spend much of a shift reaching nobody.

Can the AI agent replace my whole telecalling team in Kerala?

+

Usually it should not. The agent takes the repetitive, time-critical calls such as first contact on new leads, reminders and follow-ups, and the evening and weekend volume. People stay on negotiation, complaints, relationship calls with elders and anything that needs judgement. Callers abroad on foreign numbers and dialect-heavy calls also need a human, because the dialler reaches Indian numbers only.

How can I test the cost before committing?

+

Sign up for 50 free credits with no card, which is about ten minutes at the Standard rate. Call a few dozen of your own callers or your own phone, read the transcripts and the credits used per call in the dashboard, and then multiply by your real monthly volume. That gives a measured cost per conversation instead of an estimate.
