Payment Link Follow-Up Calls

A payment link follow-up call phones the customer who received a UPI or card payment link but has not paid, asks what stopped them and helps them complete it. Outpero places it instantly after a set delay or in bulk on the day's unpaid list, speaks the customer's language and sends the link again on WhatsApp during the call.

Why payment link follow-up calls breaks when people do it

A payment link sent by SMS or WhatsApp is easy to ignore. The customer is mid-meeting, the message scrolls away, the UPI app times out or they have a question about the amount that no one is there to answer. Sales teams chase these links by hand at the end of the day, in a rush, and the oldest unpaid links are chased last when the buyer has already cooled off. Businesses that sell on credit-free terms, such as clinics, coaching classes and small manufacturers, lose bookings simply because the payment step was left open.

Step by step

How it works

  • 01Your payment tool or CRM marks a link as unpaid after a set time, such as 30 minutes, and sends the record through a webhook, Zapier or Make, or you upload the day's unpaid list.
  • 02The agent calls, mentions the order, course or booking by name and the amount, and asks whether they had trouble paying.
  • 03It answers questions on the amount, due date or what the payment covers from your knowledge base, and notes technical problems such as UPI failure.
  • 04It resends the link on WhatsApp during the call and, if the customer wants, agrees a time to pay and records it.
  • 05The outcome, promised time and any reported problem reach your dashboard and webhook so unpaid bookings can be released or followed up.

Illustrative call

A coaching institute in Jaipur calls a student's father an hour after an admission fee link went unpaid. · Runs in Hindi with English words such as 'UPI', 'link' and 'admission'; shown here in English.

  1. Outpero AI
Hello, this is an AI assistant calling from Vidya Classes, Jaipur. Am I speaking with Mohit Agarwal?
  2. Caller
    Yes, speaking.
  3. Outpero AI
Mohit ji, we sent a payment link of ₹12,000 for your son's admission, and it is still unpaid. Did you face any trouble paying?
  4. Caller
Yes, UPI keeps failing. It says the daily limit is crossed.
  5. Outpero AI
Sorry about that. I am sending the link again on WhatsApp now, and you can also pay by card or net banking on the same page. Would that work for you?
  6. Caller
I will try the card. Does this ₹12,000 include the study material?
  7. Outpero AI
I only have the amount and that it is the first-term admission fee. I do not want to guess about study material, so I will ask the office to confirm it on WhatsApp. Is that fine?
  8. Caller
Yes, ask them. If the card works I will pay today, otherwise tomorrow evening.
  9. Outpero AI
Noted: payment today by card, or by tomorrow evening at the latest. The link is on your WhatsApp now. Thank you, Mohit ji.
  10. Caller
    Okay, thanks.
What the agent did

Captured: payment intent will pay, promised time today or by tomorrow evening, technical issue reported (UPI daily limit), question about whether the fee includes study material (flagged for the office), preferred method card, Hindi preferred. The link was resent on WhatsApp, and the outcome reached the dashboard and webhook so the seat is held, not released.

An example written to show the shape of the call, not a recording or a customer result.

How the trigger reaches Outpero

Where it comes fromHow it gets to the agent
Payment tool's unpaid link eventYour payment tool or form marks a link unpaid after a set wait and sends that record to Outpero through a webhook.
Zapier or Make scenarioA scenario checks for payment links still pending after some time and posts the name, number, amount and purpose to Outpero.
CRM deal stageA workflow in your CRM fires when an invoice sits at 'link sent', and passes the contact and amount to Outpero.
Daily unpaid listThe accounts team exports unpaid links for the day as a CSV and uploads it for an afternoon calling round.
WhatsApp resendThe agent resends the same payment link on WhatsApp while the person is on the call, so they can try again at once.

Results go back out the same way: a webhook you provide, or a live spreadsheet or API call mid-call. WhatsApp messages and calendar bookings are opt-in per employee.

What to track — and what goes wrong

TrackHow to read it
Paid after the callCompare payments received within a day of the call against unpaid links not called, using your own payment records.
Technical problems reportedGroup the failures such as UPI limits, card declines and expired links, and fix the most common one on your payment page.
Promised time against actual paymentA wide gap means the customer is promising to end the call, so shorten the follow-up gap or release the seat sooner.
Questions about the amountFrequent questions on what the fee covers show the payment page or the message is missing information.
Common mistakes
  • !Calling within minutes of sending the link, before the customer has had a real chance to pay.
  • !Letting the agent guess what the fee includes instead of sending the question to your office.
  • !Using a link that expires before the follow-up call happens.
  • !Pressuring the customer instead of recording the reason and the promised time.
Not the right tool when

Not meant for overdue invoices or collections, where a different tone and conduct apply. It is also not useful if the payment is made in cash at your counter.

Questions people ask

How long after sending the link should the call happen?

+

For low-value, impulse purchases, a call after 30 to 60 minutes catches people who got distracted. For admissions, bookings or invoices, calling the next morning is usually better. You can run both: an instant call after a short delay for new links and a bulk campaign each day for older unpaid ones. Set the calling window so nobody is called at night.

Can the agent take payment on the call?

+

No. It should never ask for card numbers, UPI PINs or OTPs on the call. It helps the customer pay through the official link by resending it on WhatsApp and answering questions. Keep this rule in the script and tell customers plainly that no one will ask for those details on the phone.

Is this the same as payment reminders?

+

They are related but different. Payment reminders chase dues on an invoice or EMI that was already agreed. Payment link follow-up covers a fresh purchase or booking where the customer was sent a link and the sale is not yet closed. The tone is helpful and sales-aware, not a collection call.

What if the customer wants to cancel?

+

The agent records the cancellation and the reason, such as price, change of plan or a better offer, and does not argue. If your policy allows it, you can give the agent an approved alternative to offer, such as an instalment plan, and everything else goes to your team through a transfer or callback request.

How much does a follow-up call cost?

+

Most payment link calls take about a minute. At one minute on Standard at ₹5/min, each call costs about ₹5, with no setup fee and no charge for unanswered calls. Recovering even one ₹12,000 admission per hundred calls usually covers the whole campaign. Prices exclude 18% GST.

How much does an AI voice agent for payment link follow-up calls cost?

+

Outpero has no setup fee and no monthly base fee — you pay only for connected talk time, from ₹5 per minute (1 credit = ₹1, credits never expire), plus ₹649/month for a dedicated calling number. You pay only for the minutes the agent is actually talking. Prices exclude 18% GST.

Enterprise and custom: volume plans go as low as ₹3.5/min, quoted on your needs.
